PhD scholarship in population and medical genetics for high throughput sequencing 
 
A 3-year PhD scholarship in population and medical genetics is available with Associate Professor Anders Albrechtsen in the Centre for Bioinformatics, Section for Computational and RNA Biology, Department of Biology, University of Copenhagen. The successful candidate is expected to work on methods development and application within medical genetics and population genetics using high throughput sequencing data and is expected to start Nov 1, 2017 or shortly thereafter. 
 
Research environment 
The position is in the group of Associate Professor Anders Albrechtsen. The group is working in statistical and computational approaches for analysis of genomic data including methods for multi-loci association studies, methods for detecting and correcting for population stratification, detecting selection on disease susceptibility genes, loci dependent methods for modeling identity by descent and various topics for analysis of second generation sequencing. 
The specific projects involve large sequencing data for admixed individuals and subsequent association and population genetic studies. However, the applicant is expected to collaborate on several other projects as well. 
 
Qualifications 
Requirements for the applicants are: 
  • MSc degree in bioinformatics or a related quantitative field 
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English 
  • Have completed formal courses in basic mathematics including 
  • Linear algebra 
  • Numerical analysis and solutions 
  • basic statistics 
  • Have completed formal courses in basic computer science including programming courses in an object orientated language and algorithms and data structures 
  • Have completed formal courses in analysis of large data or databases 
  • In addition to these formal requirements we are looking for a candidate that: 
  • has a strong interest in population genetics, medical genetics and statistical genetics 
  • has experience with programming language R and C/C++ 
  • has experience with working in Linux 
  • has experience in working with large scale genetic data including 
  • high-throughput DNA sequencing data 
  • SNP chip data 
  • has experience with development of mathematical  methods or algorithms 
  • is highly motivated, responsible, and able to work independently in a structured manner 
  • has good interpersonal and communication skills

  • Curriculum vitae (max. 2 pages), including the names and contact details of at least two referees (one of these may be the main supervisor for your master's thesis or equivalent thesis) 
  • List of publications (if relevant) incl. papers that have been accepted for publication or are submitted 
  • Bachelor and Masters diplomas and transcripts of grades 
  • If your diplomas, grade transcripts and other documentation are in a language other than a Scandinavian languages or English, you must upload translations of these. 
Assessment procedure 
After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Interview Committee. All applicants are then immediately notified about whether their application has been passed for assessment by an expert assessment committee. Selected applicants are notified of the composition of the committee and each applicant has the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that relates to the applicant himself/herself. 
 
The final selection of the successful candidate will be made by the Head of Department, based on the recommendations of the Assessment Committee. The successful candidate will then be requested to formally apply for enrolment as a PhD student at the PhD school of the Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen. Terms of salary and employment 
Terms of appointment and payment are in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Federation of Professional Associations (AC). The starting salary for candidates with an MSc degree will be a minimum of DKK 306,667 (April 2015 level) plus pension contribution, with the possibility of salary negotiation.
