PhD fellow within beta2-adrenoceptor agonists in relation to muscle metabolism and exercise performance

PhD fellow within beta2-adrenoceptor agonists in relation to muscle metabolism and exercise performance

The Department of Nutrition, Exercise and Sports invites applications for a PhD scholarship. The candidate must hold a master degree related to the area of human physiology.

The position is for a 3-year period and will commence 1 May 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Description of the scientific environment
The PhD fellow will be a part of the Integrative Physiology Group. The group covers a broad area of research related to metabolic, cardiovascular and muscular adaptations to exercise. We focus on performance and health-related benefits of exercise. In addition, the group is world leading in anti-doping research.
The group uses complex human models and advanced molecular techniques to study integrated and isolated effects of exercise, exercise training and ergogenic substances related to the regulation of muscle metabolism, angiogenesis, blood flow, insulin sensitivity, ion transport, fatigue, temperature balance and bone mineral density.

We focus on novel physiological mechanisms and conduct studies in which the results can be applied to the everyday life in groups of patients, healthy individuals of different ages and athletes.

Project description
The purpose of the PhD project is to investigate the role of beta2-adrenoceptors in skeletal muscle and their importance in regulation of metabolism and fatigue development of skeletal muscle. The project comprises of human experiments and muscle tissue analysis. Both pharmacology and exercise are used to understand the role of muscle beta2-adrenoceptors. A particular focus is the effect of acute and chronic beta2-adrenoceptor stimulation compared to that of exercise in skeletal muscle.
