PhD position in Terrestrial Ecology:

The Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, at the University of Copenhagen is offering a PhD scholarship in Terrestrial Ecology on moss-cyanobacteria associations commencing 01.10.2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Description of the scientific environment
The successful applicant will be based at the Terrestrial Ecology Section (www1.bio.ku.dk/english/research/to/), thereby joining a lively research environment covering a wide range of topics such as plant ecophysiology, biogeochemistry, soil biology and ecosystem-atmosphere interactions. Our section is a diverse group comprising research and teaching staff members, laboratory technicians, PhD candidates and MSc and BSc students, focussing on many aspects of plant and microbial activity, nutrient cycling and global change. The group has state-of-the-art laboratory facilities (https://www1.bio.ku.dk/forskning/to/faciliteter/) and substantial experience in conducting laboratory and field-based experiments.

Project description
The PhD position is part of a 4-year research project financed by the Danish Fund for Independent Research, Sapere Aude Starting Grant lead by Assistant Professor Kathrin Rousk (https://goo.gl/D9u2VD).
The aim of the project is to identify the climatic (moisture and temperature) and molecular controls of moss-associated nitrogen fixation in samples collected from ecosystems with contrasting climates. The project will involve fieldwork campaigns in arctic tundra (Northern Sweden) and tropical cloud forests (South America) as well as laboratory approaches (e.g. nitrogen fixation assays, transcriptomics, stable isotope tracking). Most of the laboratory work will be performed at the Terrestrial Ecology Section, while research visits to other laboratories are envisioned.

Principal supervisor is Assistant Professor Kathrin Rousk, Department of Biology, kathrin.rousk@bio.ku.dk.
