Applications are invited for a PhD scholarship on the ERC-funded project MERCURY ‘Mercenarism and the Accountability Void: Finding routes to accountability and remedy for the victims of human rights abuses perpetrated by mercenaries’ (https://jura.ku.dk/privategovernance/english/research/mercury/) at the Faculty of Law. You will be enrolled at the PhD School at the Faculty of Law.

This PhD position forms part of the mapping phase of MERCURY which aims to provide a novel understanding of contemporary mercenarism to underpin groundbreaking legal analysis of the shortcomings and weaknesses of national and international legal frameworks when it comes to accountability and access to justice and remedies for victims of mercenarism. The PhD project will therefore involve interdisciplinary mapping and analysis of the patterns of predatory and exploitative recruitment of mercenary and mercenary-adjacent actors (as well as the recruiters and other enablers involved in the recruitment and financing of mercenarism). It will shed light on both the evolution of mercenarism and the longer-term legal and life-trajectory consequences of such recruitment. As such, the project will require a ‘mixing methods’ approach examining how this phenomenon intersects with questions of mobility, nationality, citizenship, gender, race and other axes of inequality and vulnerability such as socio-economic circumstances.

PhD fellowship in Breaking Antimicrobial Resistance by Targeting Potentiators

We are looking for a highly motivated and skilled molecular biologist for a 3-year PhD fellowship in molecular microbiology commencing on 1 September 2026 or after agreement.

The highly collaborative project “Breaking Antimicrobial Resistance by Targeting Potentiators” is funded by The Independent Research fund Denmark (FTP) and involves leading researchers from University of Copenhagen, University of Southern Denmark (Odense), Statens Serum Institute (Copenhagen), Harvard Medical School and University of Greifswald.

Project description

One of the biggest challenges to modern health care is the increasing number of bacterial infections not responding to antibiotic treatment. This clinical challenge is compounded by the lack of mechanistic understanding of bacterial resistance. The objective of the “Breaking Antimicrobial Resistance by Targeting Potentiators” project is to combat antimicrobial resistance by delineating the molecular mechanisms whereby intrinsic bacterial factors, so-called “potentiators”, allow bacteria to develop high-level resistance to antibiotics. In the present project we will focus on methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), one of the resistant pathogens having the greatest clinical impact. Specifically, we will investigate how the Spx controlled bacterial stress response is potentiating both virulence and antimicrobial resistance in MRSA. The laboratory work will include state-of-the-art molecular methods within microbiology and immunology in combination with advanced microscopy. The PhD fellow must expect to spend at least 6 months in one of the collaborating institutions, Harvard Medical School and University of Greifswald. The

The group

The project will be supervised by Associate Professor Dorte Frees who has extensive experience in the molecular biology of antibiotic resistance and the pathogenesis of bacterial pathogens. The major research interest of the FreesLab is to identify novel targets that can be used to dis-arm bacteria by either by restoring antibiotic sensitivity, or by preventing production of central virulence factors. In the group we have a strong focus on doing excellent science in an open, collaborative, and sustainable work environment, and in supporting each members’ individual career goals.
The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research (CBMR) is an academic research Center that pioneers groundbreaking research towards better cardiometabolic health. Through collaborative interdisciplinary research from single-cell genomics to whole-body systems, CBMR aims to transform the basic understanding of cardiometabolic health and accelerate its translation into prevention and treatment strategies. The Center’s uniquely multi- and interdisciplinary approach combines research in genetics, physiology and pharmacology, to better understand the complex interplay of the many factors that drive cardiometabolic disease.
CBMR was established in 2010 at the Faculty of Health & Medical Sciences and has been located in the Maersk Tower at Panum since 2017. The around 260 employees create an international, highly collaborative research environment across disciplines.

Our group and research

The overarching aim of the Sakamoto Group is to elucidate molecular mechanisms governing cellular energy sensing, as well as the maintenance of metabolic homeostasis. Our ultimate goal is to identify therapeutic targets and their small-molecules or peptide-based modulators capable of restoring energy balance in cardiometabolic disease. Our research focuses on how post-translational modifications—particularly reversible phosphorylation—and allosteric regulation of signaling proteins and metabolic enzymes contribute to metabolic control. We also investigate how disruptions in these processes drive the development and progression of cardiometabolic diseases. To address these questions, we employ a multidisciplinary approach and collaborate with leading national and international experts. We are equally committed to fostering a supportive and dynamic research environment, with a strong emphasis on the training and professional development of early-career scientists.

Project description

Maintenance of energy and glucose homeostasis is essential for metabolic health. Our group has previously shown that glucose utilization in skeletal muscle and liver is governed by coordinated regulation through reversible phosphorylation and allosteric control, using novel knock-in mouse models expressing metabolic enzymes carrying phospho-deficient or allosteric modulator-binding-deficient mutations. This project will focus on defining how glucose phosphorylation by hexokinase 2, together with its allosteric negative feedback regulation, controls skeletal muscle glucose flux and utilization in vivo, and how this contributes to whole-body glucose homeostasis under both physiological and pathophysiological conditions. The successful candidate will perform biochemical analyses combined with structure-guided mutagenesis (cell-free and cell-based assays) to identify allosteric modulator-resistant mutants, as well as in vivo preclinical studies in multiple genetic mouse models, including metabolic phenotyping and assessment of glucose homeostasis.

The around 260 employees create an international, highly collaborative research environment across disciplines.

Department of Public Health

The Department of Public Health’s focus is to improve the health of the population and the connection between health and society. The Department provides the scientific foundation for efforts that aim to improve public health, both nationally and globally, and to create greater insight into the links between health, the individual and society as well as the ethical, equalitarian and political implications. This is achieved through research, education and engagement with stakeholders and the public at large with a wide-ranging multidisciplinary research agenda covering most aspects of public health at a high international level. You can read more about the Department of Public Health here.

Our Research

The Guasch group investigates how dietary and lifestyle factors influence cardiometabolic diseases and integrates -omics data into epidemiological analyses to identify diet–disease biomarkers and deepen our understanding of the underlying molecular mechanisms. Additionally, we have a strong interest in sustainable diets, those that promote both human and environmental health. As part of this initiative, we are conducting a new randomized clinical trial, the PLANETDIET trial, to investigate the effects of sustainable dietary patterns on traditional and novel cardiometabolic risk factors. You can read more about the Guasch Group here.

Project Description

The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary and international research group. The PhD project will focus on understanding how sustainable dietary patterns influence cardiometabolic diseases. The project specifically aims to uncover molecular mechanisms linking plant-based diets to cardiometabolic health by integrating high-dimensional multi-omics data, including metabolomics, proteomics, and genetics, with detailed dietary, clinical, and epidemiological data from large population-based cohorts and a randomized controlled trial (PLANETDIET (read here).

The candidate will work with high-throughput omics data and apply advanced statistical and computational approaches to identify diet-related molecular signatures and investigate their role in the development of cardiometabolic outcomes. The project includes both observational and interventional components, providing a unique opportunity to study causal pathways and validate findings across diverse study designs and international cohorts.

The specific work tasks will include management and harmonization of large-scale datasets, statistical and bioinformatic analyses of multi-omics data, and their integration with dietary and clinical variables. Additional responsibilities include writing and publishing scientific papers, presenting findings at international conferences, and contributing to the center and university activities. The candidate will be encouraged and supported to develop independent research ideas within the scope of the project. Opportunities for collaboration with international partners, including potential research stays abroad, will be encouraged. Teaching and supervision opportunities at the undergraduate or graduate level may also be offered. The PhD candidate will need to complete PhD courses or other equivalent education corresponding to approximately 30 ECTS points.

PhD fellowship in greenhouse gases, forest soils and biogeochemistry

The section of Forest & Landscapce Ecology at Deparment of Geoscience and Natural Resource Management (IGN) invites applicants for a PhD fellowship in soil N2O fluxes and processes in temperate forest ecosystems. The project is part of the research project ‘Predicting the climate change mitigation potential of new forest landscapes in Denmark’, which is financed by Independent Research Fund Denmark.

Start date is (expected to be) December 1st 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The project

Forests are key ecosystems in Denmark for sequestering atmospheric CO2, conserving water resources, and supporting biodiversity. As Denmark aims to reach climate neutrality by 2045, afforestation is a central component of the Green Tripartite to achieve this goal. A total of 250 000 ha of new forests will be planted over the next two decades, profoundly transforming the Danish landscape.

To reach these ambitious goals we must understand forest ecosystem functioning, particularly balancing carbon and nitrogen cycling, in the transition from agriculture to forest. The combined benefits of afforestation for climate change and N (i.e., reduced GHG emissions as well as decreased N pollution) vary with tree species, climate and soil conditions, and management practices. In Denmark especially, legacy effects of agricultural management (e.g., fertilization, liming, soil disturbance and homogenization) have created a novel state of soil N cycling, in which forests may grow faster and sequester more carbon (C). However, this may increase nitrogen leaching and soil N2O emissions, partially offsetting enhanced C sequestration. Thus, large uncertainties exist regarding changes in the nitrogen balance, particularly losses of gaseous N, along land cover transitions, partly due to limited focus on N fluxes compared to C fluxes in new forests.

About the PhD position

The PhD position aims to fill this knowledge gap by addressing how tree species, soil types and forest management practices impact net fluxes of greenhouse gases from the forest soil, focusing primarily on the strong greenhouse gas N2O, but also including CH4 and CO2. The project involves working with existing unpublished datasets from Danish forests, fieldwork at selected forest sites in Denmark with different tree species (conifers and broadleaves) and land use legacies (agriculture and forest), and doing laboratory mesocosm experiments. You will be measuring greenhouse gas fluxes using advanced methods for gas detection in the field and laboratory, including stable isotope techniques, and deploy mathematical and statistical tools to analyze the data.

Your key responsibilities in the PhD project are

Analyse existing unpublished data sets on N2O and other greenhouse gases for Danish forests

Plan and execute field work in Denmark during your PhD project

Plan and execute laboratory studies of soil greenhouse gas dynamics

Attend PhD courses (in total of 30 ECTS)

Write scientific articles and your PhD thesis

Disseminate your research at the institute and conferences

Research visit to Land-CRAFT at Aarhus University

Work for the department (teaching and supervision of students)

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for candidates within the field(s) soil, biogeochemistry or environmental science and it is expected that you are experienced in data analyses and use of R or similar programming language. Fieldwork experience is required and it is an advantage that you have demonstrated prior knowledge of handling advanced equipment for greenhouse gas studies. Applicants must be fluent in both written and spoken English to a level sufficiently high for communication and dissemination at an academic level.

Our group and research- and what do we offer?

As a PhD student, you will be enrolled at SCIENCE PhD school at University of Copenhagen and your main workplace will be at IGN in Copenhagen where you will be part of the Biogeochemistry research group. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in dynamic and international research environment. Our research group is focused on soil and ecosystem biogeochemistry in forests and nature, including grasslands and wetlands. We use field and laboratory experiments with an emphasis and measure pools and fluxes of water, carbon, nitrogen and other nutrients. We have an advanced laboratory for chemical analyses soil, water and biomass and an up-to-date portfolio of analyzers and chamber systems for greenhouse gas studies.

Dr. Jesper Riis Christiansen (IGN, jrc@ign.ku.dk) will be your main supervisor. Jesper is working with N2O and CH4 fluxes in forest and wetland soils and investigates how nature restoration (afforestation and rewetting) affect the soil processes that produce these greenhouse gases. Academic co-supervision will be provided by Prof. Per Gundersen (IGN) and Prof. Klaus Butterbach-Bahl (Aarhus University) at Land-CRAFT in Aarhus where you are expected to spend part of your time for laboratory experiments.
