Assistant professor to EU project “SWEET”

The Department of Nutrition, Sports and Exercise, Faculty of Sciences, University of Copenhagen, UCPH, has an opening for a position as Assistant Professor from May 2019. This temporary position will last for 4 years until April 2023 and is a 37 hour employment. The post is financed by funding from the EU Horizon 2020 program.
 
The assistant professor’s duties will primarily include research, including obligations with regard to publication/scientific communication and research-based teaching with associated examination obligations.
 
About us: 
The research group “Prevention and treatment of obesity” carries out multidisciplinary research in order to prevent and treat lifestyle diseases focusing on obesity, but also on its complications such as type-2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.  
 
Project description: 
The position will be closely connected to the “SWEET” project (Sweeteners and sweetness enhancers: Impact on health, obesity, safety and sustainability), www.sweetproject.eu, which is a multinational five-year Horizon-2020 project with a total budget of 9 mio. Euro and involving 29 partners from Europe. UCPH (prof. Anne Raben) is co-coordinator of the project assisting the coordinator, University of Liverpool. UCPH is also responsible for one work package (WP3), which concerns a 2-y multi-center, multi-national clinical intervention trial investigating the effect of non- or low-caloric sweeteners in 660 overweight adults and children (families). Finally, UCPH takes part of WP2, comprising a number of shorter clinical meal test studies. The Post Doc / Ass. Prof. will be the daily responsible for the execution of the clinical studies at UCPH under the supervision of Prof. Anne Raben.
 
The position has the following main tasks:
 
SWEET project: 
  • Development of the study protocol for WP3 and all related documents and submission of these to the local Ethical Committee. 
  • Preparation of the dietary recommendations (WP3). 
  • Development of the (electronic) CRF, and assisting in setting up the database and datahub for WP3.  
  • Development of other material needed for the conduct of the WP3 study. 
  • Responsible for inclusion, contact to and handling of study participants (WP2 and WP3). 
  • Planning of study procedures and daily responsible for the overall execution of the studies in UCPH. 
  • Daily coordination and management of project staff (e.g. dieticians, laboratory technicians, students). 
  • Assistance with planning, executing, and reporting from the projects’ meetings. 
  • Possibly management of budgets.  
  • Writing and submission of applications for additional funding for this and future studies.  
  • Preparation of or co-authoring of manuscripts related to the project. 
Other:  
  • Daily follow-up management of the recent EU FP7 project “PREVIEW” (2013-18).  
  • Responsibility for other projects, publications, or tasks as relevant for the research group.  
  • Supervision of Bachelor and Master Thesis students and possibly co-supervise one or more Ph.D.-students. 
  • Teaching and planning of student courses. Teaching will mainly be in the field of food and macronutrient consumption/metabolism and lifestyle diseases.
Qualifications - selection criteria:  
Applicants must have an academic degree within Human Nutrition or Exercise or a related scientific field. Qualifications within the following scientific areas are required: 
  • Documented scientific qualifications such as a Ph.D. or other substantial scientific and documented experience in relation to the above subject area.  
  • Thorough knowledge about the research field of diet, obesity, cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. 
  • Experience in working with short- and long-term dietary intervention studies in relation to risk of lifestyle disease.  
  • Project leader skills, preferably with experience in conducting randomized human clinical trials related to obesity and lifestyle diseases – and according to GCP guidelines (GCP-certification will be an advantage). 
  • Experience with EU projects will be an advantage. 
  • Documented teaching and supervisor experience is an advantage. 
  • Excellent English skills including scientific language (orally and in writing) 
Since the position requires contact with study volunteers who may only speak Danish it is a strong advantage if the candidate can speak Danish, Swedish or Norwegian.

Terms of employment 
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.  
Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.  
 
The starting salary is currently up to DKK 426.625 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 72.952). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
