PhD Scholarship at Center for Chromosome Stability (CCS), Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences (SUND), University of Copenhagen

A fully funded 3-year PhD position is available from Oct 1, 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter at the CCS, Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine (, University of Copenhagen. Associate Professor Ying Liu will be the principal supervisor for the PhD student, and Prof. Ian D. Hickson will be the primary co-supervisor of this project.
Project title
The identification of the interacting partners of human DNA polymerase delta subunit POLD3
Project description
POLD3 is known to play an important role in ‘break-induced-replication’ repair (BIR) process in human cells. In cancer cells that are subjected to oncogene-activation induced replication stress, this repair process is elevated and can be detected in the newly discovered mitotic DNA synthesis (MiDAS). It remains unknown how POLD3 contributes to this process. This project aims to identify POLD3 interacting partners, which could hopefully explain the precise function of POLD3 in MiDAS. The knowledge gained from this project will allow us to understand how cancer cells use POLD3-mediated MiDAS to rescue the replication that is not completed in S phase due to replication stress. This would ultimately allow us to design better treatment for cancer patients.
Job description
The key tasks as a PhD fellow at the Faculty are to:
• Carry out and complete an independent research project under supervision
• Write scientific articles and the PhD thesis on the grounds of your research project
• Complete PhD courses or other equivalent education corresponding to approx. 30 ECTS points
• Obtain experience with teaching and/or other types of dissemination related to your PhD project
• Participate in national and international congresses and scientific meetings
• Obtain experience from an external research institution, preferably abroad
Research environment
This project will be carried out in Asso. Prof. Liu’s group in the Center for Chromosome Stability ( that was recently established by a grant from The Danish National Research Foundation. It provides a top international level research environment to train young researchers in the fields of Cellular biology, Genetics and Biochemistry. The CCS currently employs 8 principal investigators, 3 technicians, 19 post docs/assistant professors, and 16 PhD students as well as a number of master students.
The CCS is part of a greater research environment at The Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine ( aiming to produce research with high international impact. The research focus is on the functional cell, its genetic components and molecular cellular mechanisms in a medical context. The ICMM currently comprises five research programmes, three high profile research centers, as well as a number of international research groups. The scientists at ICMM are also involved in high quality research based undergraduate and graduate teaching programs at the University of Copenhagen.
Applicants should hold an MSc degree in biology, molecular biomedicine, biochemistry or a closely related field. Candidates who do not yet have their degree, but who are expecting to finish with 1–2 months, should specify the date when they expect to hand in their thesis. We are seeking a highly motivated and ambitious individual with good interpersonal and communication skills. Previous experience with techniques in the fields of human cellular and molecular biology, genetics and biochemistry (e.g. cell culture, PCR, western blotting, cloning, fluorescence microscopy, FACS, etc) will be considered advantageous. Fluency in spoken and written English is a requirement. The scholarship is open to both Danish and international applicants.
Applicants are requested to submit their application with the following documents:
• Curriculum vitae
• Certificates of Bachelor degree and MSc degree or the equivalent documents.
• A cover letter describing your research interests and reasons for applying to this position
• A list of the publications (or manuscripts) that have been submitted or accepted for publication
• Transcripts of university examinations (from both Bachelor and Master degrees) (in English)
• Contact details of two referees
Applicants are encouraged to provide evidence of English and other skills.
The deadline for applications is 1st Sept. 2017. After the expiry of the deadline for application, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Interview Committee. The final selection of successful candidates will be made by the Head of Department, based on the recommendations of the assessment committee. Successful candidates will then be requested to formally apply for enrolment as a PhD student at the PhD school of the Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen. For more information see:
Terms of salary and employment
Terms of appointment and payment are in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Federation of Professional Associations (AC). The starting salary for candidates with an MSc degree will be a minimum of DKK 306,667 (April 2015 level) plus pension contribution, with the possibility of salary negotiation. The University of Copenhagen wishes to reflect the diversity of society and welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.
