Postdoctoral fellow in insect physiology and endocrinology at the Department of Biology, University of Copenhagen

The Rewitz/Halberg lab at the Section of Cell and Neurobiology at the University of Copenhagen is looking for a highly motivated and ambitious postdoctoral candidate to join our group working at the interface between molecular genetics and integrative physiology. The position is available for 2 years with the possibility of an extension.

Our research
The main focus of our research is to understand the mechanism of action of insect hormones in regulating critical homeostatic processes such feeding, metabolism and salt and water balance using the genetic model organisms Drosophila and Tribolium. We employ a wide range of bioinformatics, genetic and molecular biological methods supported by traditional physiological and advanced bioimaging techniques.

Specific project
The project will focus on developing a comprehensive tissue-specific gene expression database for the genetic model organism and global pest species Tribolium castaneum using RNA-sequencing. In addition, we wish to use this transcriptomic atlas to identify and characterise molecular targets that influence key homeostatic processes in beetles, with the aim of unmasking novel targets for beetle pest control.

Qualifications
We are seeking a highly motivated scientist with a PhD or equivalent in genetics, biochemistry, physiology, molecular biology or in a similar relevant field. Ideally, applicants have the following qualifications:
  • Strong documented experience in genetics (e.g. RNAi and CRISPR).
  • Strong documented experience in molecular biology (e.g. RNA extraction and cloning).
  • Experience with Drosophila and/or Tribolium.
  • Experience with different imaging techniques (e.g. confocal microscopy).
  • Experience with cell culturing.
  • Excellent collaboration skills.
  • Excellent English communication skills, both oral and written.
Yet, we welcome any applicant with a strong research track record, and an interest in the field. In addition, the University wishes our staff to reflect the diversity of society and thus welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.

Place of employment
The place of employment is at Department of Biology, University of Copenhagen, which is located close to the center of Copenhagen. We offer both a creative and stimulating working conditions in a young, dynamic and international research environment.

Terms of salary and employment
Duration is 2 years with a possibility of extension. Salary, pension and terms of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Academics Central organization. Currently, the monthly salary starts at 32,745 DKK/ ~ 4,337 Euro plus pension. Depending on qualifications, a higher salary may be negotiated. Non-Danish and Danish applicants may be eligible for tax reductions, if they hold a PhD degree and have not lived in Denmark the last 10 years. The position is covered by the “Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff at the Universities” of June 28, 2013.

The application must include the following documents/attachments – all in PDF format:
A cover letter stating the motivation and qualifications of the applicant (max. one page).
CV incl. education, work/research experience, language skills and other skills relevant for the position (max 2 pages).
Full list of publications.
A certified/signed copy of the PhD certificate, Master diploma and other relevant certificates.
List of references including contact details.
Please forward your application via the job portal of The University of Copenhagen at Job Portal. Press “APPLY NOW” to fill in the application form. The deadline for the application is 15th of September 2017 at 11:59 PM CET.
