Postdoctoral position in medicinal chemistry at Center for Peptide-Based Antibiotics

Postdoctoral position at Center for Peptide-Based Antibiotics, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen
A postdoctoral position is available in medicinal chemistry in the area of discovery and studies of novel peptide-based antibiotics. The postdoctoral fellow will be affiliated with Department of Drug Design and Pharmacology. The position is for 2 years (with a possibility of extension) and is available from January 1st, 2018 or upon agreement.
Job description
The postdoc project involves design and synthesis of novel antisense antimicrobial PNA- conjugates and derivatives. A major task will be to design and synthesize new building blocks that enable exploration of structure-activity relationships in order to optimize antibacterial potency and minimize cytotoxic side effects.
Thus, the medicinal chemistry studies comprise identification of safe delivery methods facilitating  efficient transport of PNA oligomers conjugates across the bacterial envelope, as well as peptide nucleic acid (PNA) oligomers displaying enhanced affinity to the targeted mRNA. Extensive experience in gram-scale preparative organic synthesis and chromatographic methods is required. A candidate with experience in heterocyclic chemistry (e.g. synthesis of DNA analogues) and peptide synthesis as well as relevant analytical methods (NMR, HPLC and MALDI-TOF) will be preferred.
The work will be closely integrated with related projects in the research center, and the  applicant is expected to possess an outgoing interdisciplinary approach toward collaboration with medicinal chemists as wells as molecular biologists and microbiologists.
Scientific environment
Center for Peptide-Based Antibiotics (Cepan) offers an ambitious scientific environment, with many different nationalities represented. Cepan is a research center at University of Copenhagen supported by the Novo Nordisk Foundation Challenge program aiming at discovery of novel peptide-based antibiotics targeting resistant Gram-negative bacteria.
