PhD fellow in Study Culture and Study Practices of First-year University Students

Department of Science Education, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering a PhD scholarship in Study Culture and Study Practices of First-year University Students commencing 01.12.2017 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Description of the scientific environment
The University Science Education research group studies teaching and learning at universities with an emphasis on science and engineering university programmes and on students’ experiences. A particular focus has been on students’ transition processes into higher education and during the first years. Present research projects study the transition into the labour market and from bachelor to master’s level. Another area of interest is the development and documentation of the competences of university staff related to teaching and learning. The research mainly applies qualitative methods, although sometimes mixed with quantitative methods. Read more about the research group here and the IRIS-project about recruitment and transition into higher education in science and engineering here:
Project description
The project will study first-year students at three study programmes at the University of Copenhagen – two at the humanities and one at the sciences. The study will explore how students at the programmes develop a particular study practice and student identity and through this how they contribute to the construction of a study culture at the programme. Taking the students’ perspective and the students’ experiences as a point of departure, the PhD project will study the interaction between on the one hand the students and on the other, the institutional framing of the students’ study activities. This framing includes the teachers, the peers, the teaching and learning activities, the curriculum, the extracurricular activities as well as activities outside the university. The study will be conducted using qualitative methods. Read more here.
The PhD project will be accompagnied by another project that also includes quantitative analyses of, inter alia, students’ trajectories before and within the programme, student experiences with teaching and student identification with the programme subject.
