PhD fellow in sedimentology

Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering a PhD scholarship in sedimentology commencing 01.01.2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Description of the scientific environment
The project is part of a large research consortium focussing on the development of hydrocarbon reservoirs in the Lower Cretaceous carbonates/marls of the Danish North Sea. The consortium is a collaboration between University of Copenhagen, Aarhus University, the Technical University of Denmark and the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland funded by Danish Hydrocarbon Research and Technology Centre and involves a number PhD and Post doc positions. The successful candidate will work within Basin Studies Research Group (Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management, University of Copenhagen), which hosts a prolific research environment within various fields of sedimentology, stratigraphy and palaeoenvironmental studies.

Project description
The PhD project constitutes a central element in a larger work package involving a number of researchers. The overall aim of the work package is to develop a framework that enables the prediction of essential reservoir properties of the Lower Cretaceous pelagic carbonates and marls away from existing wells in the Danish North Sea. The PhD student will focus on creating a quantified link between depositional processes, reservoir properties, clay content, microtexture, and stacking patterns. Detailed sedimentological description and interpretation of drill cores will constitute a large part of the project. This will be supplemented with correlation to other, previously described cores, analysis of stacking patterns, and quantitative microtextural analyses of core samples and cuttings. Results will be placed within an integrated stratigraphic framework developed in collaboration between all participants of the work package. The PhD student will work closely together with another PhD student based at Aarhus University.
