Assistant professor in Toxicology and Drug Metabolism

The Department of Pharmacy at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, seeks to appoint an Assistant professor in Toxicology and Drug Metabolism starting as soon as possible.
Job description
The assistant professorship is a further-education post. The main responsibilities are:
  • research, including publication/scientific communication of research results
  • research-based teaching with associated examination duties
  • academic assessments
Research related to this position is based at the intersection of in vitro toxicology of drug substances and advanced analytical chemistry (microfluidics). We aim to develop a microfluidic live-cell in vitro assay, which can screen for endocrine disruption of human steroidogenesis within very short time-frames and with low costs. The work includes design and fabrication of microfluidic lab-on-a-chip systems, miniaturization of the traditional H295R steroidogenesis assay, i.e., culturing and maintaining H295R cells on a microchip, chiral separation of drug compounds applying chiral electrophoresis, and quantification of steroid hormones with HPLC-MSMS.
The successful applicant will be expected to teach in the fields of toxicology and analytical chemistry at bachelor and master levels and to supervise master thesis students. In addition to the above responsibilities, the assistant professor may be asked to perform other duties. The Faculty determines the exact ratio between the different responsibilities. The ratio may vary over time, but a balance has to be struck for the assistant professor to be able to improve his or her qualifications in areas relevant to the position (typically research and teaching).
The assistant professor will upon employment be included in the Department’s academic junior career program with the aim of qualifying the assistant professor best possible for a future academic career and a possible tenure. The main elements of the academic junior career program are:
  • Supervision and mentoring with dedicated research and teachings mentors
  • The opportunity to enhance pedagogical competencies with a view to a written assessment of the assistant professor’s teaching qualifications.
  • Development of research and project management skills
  • National and international collaboration
About us
Research related to this position will be performed in the Toxicology and Drug Metabolism Group led by Associate Professor Bjarne Styrishave. The research project itself is led by Assistant Prof. Andreas Kretschmann in strong collaboration with the Microscale Analytical Systems Group (Prof. Joerg P. Kutter).
The Toxicology Laboratory has great expertise in in vitro and in vivo research on the endocrine disrupting potential of particular pharmaceuticals and applies enzyme and cell based in vitro assays as well as in vivo assays and analytical tools such as HPLC-MSMS and GC-MSMS. Information about the two research groups as well as the Department of Pharmacy can be found under
Required qualifications
  • Candidates are required to have attained research and teaching qualifications on a level corresponding to that of a PhD.
  • Candidates should hold a PhD degree in (bio)analytical chemistry, pharmacy, biochemistry, toxicology, or a similar relevant field.
  • Candidates who can document original scientific production in an area related to the above mentioned research, i.e., in in vitro toxicology using enzyme and/ or cell based assays, microfluidic technology, and/ or lab-on-a-chip devices are preferred. Furthermore, experience with analytical tools like HPLC-MSMS is considered an advantage.
  • An excellent publication record is required.
  • Good English communication skills, both oral and written, are a prerequisite for the successful candidate.
Terms of employment
The employment is for 3 years. The place of work is the Department of Pharmacy, Universitetsparken 2, 2100 Copenhagen. Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set according to the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organization.
