Postdoc in Geomicrobiology - Biogeochemical Cycling in the Plastisphere

Biogeochemical Cycling in the Plastisphere
Applications are welcome for a two-year postdoc position placed at the Departmet of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management at the University of Copenhagen (IGN) and is funded by a VILLUM Foundation Young Investigator Programme Grant to Assistant Professor Nicole Posth. The selected candidate will work in the Geomicrobiology lab established in the Basin Studies group. This work will be carried out in association with collaborators at Stockholm University (Sweden), University of Southern Denmark, and the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research (Germany), among others.

In this project, we aim to define the microbial communities associated with marine plastic debris, the interaction of microbial communities at the microbe-plastic interface, and biogeochemical cycling at or near marine plastic debris. Therefore, the selected candidate will have a strong background in biogeochemistry, marine microbiology, or geomicrobiology required to explore microbe-plastic interactions and element cycling associated with plastic debris in the marine environment.

Qualifications and job requirements:
The selected candidate will be highly motivated and able to successfully take an interdisciplinary approach to this exciting, emerging topic. We seek an individual with a strong interest in microbial ecology, biogeochemistry, and/or material science, as well as practical experience in the use of stable isotopes for the quantification of microbial processes in natural communities, next generation methods for community profiling, bio-imaging of cell-surface interfaces, and/or standard and cutting-edge geomicrobiological techniques. The candidate must have completed her/his PhD in a relevant discipline. Strong lab skills and an aptitude for fieldwork are required.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the daily management of his/her research project in coordination with other members of the group. S/he will be involved in the training and co-supervision of staff members/students and the position may include performance of additional duties such as teaching and outreach.
