Assistant or Associate Professor in large animal surgery

University of Copenhagen seeks to appoint an Assistant or Associate Professor in large animal surgery at the Department of Large Animal Sciences from 1 July 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter. The period of employment as Assistant Professor will be limited to 4 years, while candidates eligible for an associate professorship will be offered a permanent position.   
 
The Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences is subdivided into five sections and the assistant/associate professor will be employed in the Section of Large Animal Medicine and Surgery. The veterinary program provides research-based education, and the Large Animal University Hospital offers state-of-the-art facilities for research, clinical teaching, and clinical service. The section's main activities are applied clinical research within the fields of large animal diseases and welfare, as well as clinical and didactic teaching.  
The section also encompasses a mobile clinic and a clinical diagnostic laboratory, which provide services to the hospital, teaching and research activities. Information about the Department can be found at: http://ikv.ku.dk/english/
 
Job description
This is a full-time academic position involving the majority of time spent in clinical research and didactic and clinical teaching. To a limited extent the position may also include other duties e.g. after hours duty, where all the department's patients (horses, small and large ruminants, and pigs) are serviced. During the period of employment as assistant professor, the applicant will have to complete didactic training. Interested applicants that demonstrate a high research output and good clinical skills may be able to enter into a clinical training program, such as a residency.   
 
The applicant must be willing to participate in the after-hours duty.   
 
The duties will primarily consist of
  • research, including publication/scientific communication   
  • research-based teaching with associated examination duties   
  • communication of research results to the public peer assessment   
  • For the post of Associate Professor, such duties may also include performance of research management, educational guidance and supervision of Assistant Professors, PhD students, and professional assessment work.
Required qualifications
  • A DVM with Danish authorisation or immediate eligibility  
  • A PhD degree in large animal surgery or equine orthopedics or similar qualifications   
  • Experience in clinical teaching and research expertise within large animal surgical and/or orthopedic diseases initiative, a strong motivation, and excellent scientific skills   
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written   
  • Clinical experience with hospital management of large animals   
  • If Danish is not the first language, the applicant is expected to obtain sufficient Danish skills within 1-2 years   
  • The candidate is also required to be enterprising and to possess good interpersonal skills.
  • The successful candidate will be able to document a high output of original scientific work at an international level within the areas of large animal surgery and/or equine orthopedics with a primary focus on horses and to a lesser extent on ruminants. Clinical experience within large animals will also be considered.
In connection with the appointment to the post of associate professor special importance will be attached to the applicant having the professional and personal qualifications stated below:   
  • Research and teaching qualifications corresponding to what can be achieved through an appointment as assistant professor in relation to the above subject areas 
  • A research portfolio reflecting research activities achievable in a position as assistant professor or equivalent within the subject area 
  • If the applicant has had no previous teaching experience through employment as an assistant professor or has not achieved corresponding teaching experience, the appointment will be probationary for 1½ years
Terms of employment
Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organissations. The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities (2013).

The further process
Shortlist: After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Appointments Committee. All applicants will be notified whether an expert assessment committee has passed their application for assessment. Selected applicants will be notified of the composition of the committee and each applicant has the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that relates to the applicant him/herself.
