Postdoc in regional climate modelling analyses and result dissemination

Niels Bohr Institute
Faculty of Science
University of Copenhagen

As part of the EU Horizon 2020 funded activity “European Climate Prediction system” (EUCP),
the Climate and Computational Geophysics group is offering a postdoc position for a period of 3 years commencing 1 April 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

EUCP aims at producing actionable climate information for risk-based planning. The overarching objective of EUCP is to develop an innovative European regional ensemble climate prediction system based on a new generation of improved and typically higher-resolution climate models, covering timescales from seasons to decades initialised with observations, and designed to support practical and strategic climate adaptation and mitigation decision-taking on local, national and global scales.

The postdoc’s duties will include research within regional climate modelling evaluation and analyses to integrate information arising from high-resolution regional projections into the overall prediction system for Europe. Furthermore, activities will also involve documentation, data exchange and integrating of science with EUCP users and may also include other miscellaneous duties.

The candidate will have several of the following qualifications:
- a university degree in meteorology, physics, maths or other related disciplines in natural sciences and Earth science is essential. A Ph.D. in an appropriate discipline would be beneficial
- experience in the field of regional and/or global modelling of the climate or Earth system, preferably experience with limited-area climate models
- experience in post-processing of climate data for scientific application
- familiarity with the analysis of data sets from climate models. Profound knowledge in appropriate programming languages such as Python and R and experience with Linux/Unix computer environments
- experience in contributing (scientifically and organizationally) to international scientific projects and networks, such as the CORDEX or EURO-CORDEX initiative
- experience in engaging with business, policy and/or decision makers on climate issues
- experience in communicating scientific results to scientists of the vulnerability, impact, adaptation and climate services communities
The EUCP activities at Climate and Computational Geophysics are co-developed with the Danish Meteorological Institute, also a partner in EUCP.
