PhD fellowship in Mechanisms of Cardiac Arrhythmia

A 3 year PhD fellowship lead by Professor Thomas Jespersen, Department of Biomedical Sciences (BMI), Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. The start date is between May and September 2018
About the group: In the Card.Phys. group we are around 10 people; Master and PhD students, 1-2 Postdoc and a technician. We have an open and friendly atmosphere where everyone helps each other.
Job description: In the laboratory we focus on cardiac arrhythmia. We span from molecular and biochemical methods, over cellular and ex vivo heart analyses, to in vivo investigations of rodents and pigs. Our prime focus is underlying causes of atrial and ventricular arrhythmia. With this scholarship we have not yet produced a final project description. The ambition is to combine your qualifications with one of our many interesting projects. However, the overall focus of the project will be the pathophysiology of cardiac arrhythmia. But this can be addressed both from a technical (e.g development and analyses of multielectrode recordings of arrhythmia), a medicine (e.g. pig surgery/echo/ECG/multielectrode recordings), a pharmaceutical (e.g. treatment of AF in different animal models), or a life science/biological (e.g. molecular biology/biochemistry/imaging/cell culture combined with patch-clamping, electrophysiology of isolated hearts (Langendorff or action potential recordings/sharp electrode) and/or rodent in vivo electrophysiology) perspective.
Information about the research focus and methodology can be found on our homepage and in our scientific articles. You are also more than welcome to contact Prof. Jespersen for further information. More about the group
Required qualifications: You must hold a master degree in medical, life, pharmaceutical, technical or likewise sciences.
Desired qualifications: We are looking for a skilled and highly committed researcher. If you can deliver high-level skills within one of the above-mentioned research methods and in the same time show profound dedication to revealing the underlying mechanisms of arrhythmia, we will together design a research program which will be challenging, but also highly interesting and rewarding for you.
Additional qualifications:  Felasa C, publications, complementary skills.
Terms of employment:
The successful PhD candidate will be offered a full-time position for a period of three years, contingent on a satisfactory performance, with the specific intent that it results in a PhD degree and scientific publications.
It is a prerequisite for the appointment as a PhD fellow that the person concerned can be registered as a PhD fellow according to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation Executive Order no 18 of 14. January 2008. Information about the PhD programs at the Faculty of Health and Medical Science can be found at
