PhD Position in Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience at the Department of Psychology, University of Copenhagen

Applications are invited for a PhD position at the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Copenhagen. The chosen candidate will work on the ERC-funded DEVOMIND project, investigating the mechanisms underlying infants’ perspective-taking and mentalizing skills. The broader ERC project will use neuroimaging methods (EEG, fNIRS) together with behavioural methods (Eye-tracking, looking-time, manual search) to test a novel theory of infants’ early mentalizing abilities, and the scope of the specific PhD project will be agreed with the Principal Investigator of the project and the PhD supervisor, Professor Victoria Southgate. The position will be available from September 2018.
Applicants should hold an internationally recognized Master’s degree in psychology or a related discipline. Candidates should be knowledgeable about Theory of Mind and the current state of the art in this field, be willing to combine behavioural and neuroimaging methods, and should strive for an academic career in the long run.
The application should include:
  • A CV or resume, including a list of publications, if any
  • A brief letter of motivation
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Bachelor and Master degree certificates
  • A research proposal of between 1000 and 2000 words. While the successful applicant will work on the broad question of the mechanisms sub-serving infants’ ostensible mentalizing skills, the candidate is required to write a research proposal on a question within this domain. The research proposal is not necessarily expected to be undertaken, but will be used to assess the applicant’s understanding of the research process. The proposal should situate the project in the context of the current state-of-the-art, demonstrate understanding of open questions and how these could be addressed with empirical studies, and outline possible methodologies and paradigms for addressing the question.
The application must be submitted electronically via the Job Portal of the University of Copenhagen
The University of Copenhagen wishes to reflect the surrounding society, and invites all qualified applicants, regardless of personal background, to apply for the positions.
The deadline for applications is March 31st 2018, 12pm CET.
The chosen candidates will be enrolled as PhD students at the Faculty of Social Sciences (see the rules of the Danish Ministerial order No 1039 of August 27th 2013), completing the PhD program as a three year full-time study (see PhD students are paid a salary in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC).
