FACS/FC Specialist

Center for Basic and Translational Neuroscience is looking for a highly motivated FACS/FC Specialist with expertise in flow cytometry and fluorescence activated cell sorting
Description of the research team 
Our center is a part of the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences of the University of Copenhagen, and is located in the Panum Institute. We currently have 40 employees and students, formed into two interacting Divisions, and is undergoing rapid expansion. The Center comprises newly constructed laboratories with excellent facilities for neuroscience. Our research is aimed at defining new strategies for the treatment of neurological diseases that target glial cell dysfunction. For more information, visit 
The research focus is on the basic biology of neural precursor cells in the central nervous system, specifically glial progenitors, and their role in neurological and neuropsychiatric diseases, including myelin disorders (multiple sclerosis and the leukodystrophies), Huntington disease, schizophrenia and frontotemporal dementia. Our research is also aimed at defining dysregulated signaling pathways in malignant glial cell tumors.  
Work description 
The selected candidate will operate and maintain multi-laser instruments used in Fluorescent Activated Cell Sorting (FACS) and Flow Cytometry (FC) analyses, including a Moflo Astrios high-speed cell sorter and a Cytoflex analyzer. The candidate will provide technical expertise, leadership and support for FC/FACS operations for assay/result troubleshooting. The selected candidate will also process sorted cells for subsequent molecular and genomic analyses. 
The position offers the opportunity to work in a highly ambitious multi-disciplinary lab engaged in neuroscience. Our center is newly established and rapidly expanding, and thus needs an adaptable and ambitious candidate to interact, assist and perform FACS/FC experiments in collaboration with a diverse international group of scientists. Applications include flow cytometric analysis and aseptic cell sorting (human ES, IPS, murine brain cells), single cell sequencing and nanoparticle related analyses. The candidate will be responsible for training new users and personnel, as well as to perform, optimize and implement new protocols and procedures when needed.  
Duties and responsibilities 
Lab management: 
·         Placement and managing of orders related to cell sorter and analyzer (consumables, reagents, tools etc.) 
·         Training and assistance of selected users for operation of the Moflo Astrios  
·         Training and assistance to users in experimental design, troubleshooting and software analysis 
·         RNA and other sample preparation and quality assessment following sorting  
·          Daily calibration, operation, maintenance of lab cell sorters and analyzers 
·          Operational logistics ensuring supply availability and user scheduling Preparation of solutions for FACS/FC analyses Contact vendor and service engineers when needed; quality assurance and maintenance of laboratory QA/QC logs 
Experimental conduct: 
·         Perform multi-parameter aseptic cell sorting, including single cell and microparticle 
·         Analysis using various software including FlowJo, Summit, Kaluza and CellQuest 
·         Interacts with a multidisciplinary team to continuously optimize assay performance 
·         Design and execute multiparameter cell sorting and flow cytometry based analyses 
·         Perform single cell sorting and analyses, including initial post-sort cell processing (RNA and DNA extraction, quality control) 
·         Prepare reports for researchers; record sample information and results into a laboratory information system 
·         Masters degrees in a biological science or clinical laboratory science 
·         Experience with FACS/flow cytometry related instrumentation 
·         Proven experience with cell culture and/or molecular biology  
·         Knowledge of analysis software systems such as Summit, Flow Jo, Kaluza, CellQuest, FACSDiVA, flow cytometry software 
·         Ability to think critically and demonstrate troubleshooting and problem solving skills 
·         Ability to work well with others 
·         Good communication skills in English and Danish 
Start date 
1 May 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter 
Employment period 
The position is for one year 
Terms of salary and employment 
Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the provisions of the collective agreement between the Danish Government and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). To the basic salary, a supplement can be negotiated. The position is a full-time position.
