Postdoc positions in Proteomics, Epigenetics and Cell Signaling

Two postdoctoral positions are available at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research (CPR –, University of Copenhagen. Salary: ~50,000-54,000€ PA, plus 17.1% in pension contributions.

About CPR and the research Group

The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research (CPR), , at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, has been established to promote basic and applied discovery research on human proteins of medical relevance. The Center comprises a wide range of expertise and skills, from bioinformatics, proteomics, high-content microscopy, high-throughput protein production, to functional dissection of complex signaling systems.

The Department of Proteomics at CPR is headed by Prof. Matthias Mann, and the “Proteomics and Cell Signaling” group in the department is led by Group Leader Prof. Chunaram Choudhary. We use cutting-edge mass spectrometry (MS)-based technologies for unbiased identification and quantification of posttranslational modifications, such as ubiquitylation, phosphorylation and acetylation (Nat Biotechnol. 2015;33(4):415-23; Nature. 2015;527(7578):389-93; Nat Rev Mol Cell Biol. 2014;15(8):536-50; Nat Rev Mol Cell Biol. 2010;11(6):427-39; Mol Cell. 2013;51(2):265-72; Nat Cell Biol. 2012 (10):1089-98; Mol Cell. 2012;46(2):212-25; Science. 2009;325(5942):834-40). Using these approaches we study cell signaling at a “systems-level” in response to different perturbations (such as growth factor stimulation, chemical and genetic perturbations etc.). Furthermore, we use protein-protein interaction studies to identify specific interaction partners for proteins of our interest. In addition to the state-of-the-art mass spectrometry infrastructure, the department is well-equipped for performing follow-up studies using molecular biology, cell biology and biochemistry techniques. The Center offers the latest technologies and expertise for genome-wide siRNA screens, CRISPR-based genome editing, high-resolution microscopy, live cell imaging, and protein biophysical characterizations. Our group is technically and internationally diverse and embedded in excellent environment for high-quality research and collaboration. We are now looking for highly motivated and qualified postdoc candidates to join our research group.

Project Description

The candidates will use a combination of the cutting-edge proteomics and CRSPR-based genome editing methods to investigate the dynamics and functions of ubiquitylation and acetylation in genetically defined cell models. Among other tasks, this will include generation of knockout cell lines, affinity-tagging of endogenous proteins, mass spectrometry-based analysis of protein-protein interactions and proteome-wide quantification of PTMs. The project about acetylation signaling will also include global analysis of transcript abundance (i.e. RNA-Seq) and genome-wide mapping of specific epigenetic marks (i.e. Chip-Seq) using the next generation nucleic acid sequencing technologies. The candidate is also expected to apply various biochemical and molecular biology approaches for biological follow-up experiments on novel and interesting findings derived from large-scale proteomic screens.

Tentative start date: Summer 2017.


The candidate should have demonstrated excellent scientific productivity, evidenced by high-quality research publications, be able to conduct independent and creative research, and show good inter-personal and communication skills.

  • The candidate is required to have PhD or equivalent degree in natural or medical science
  • Excellent scientific track record, including at least one publication as first author in a high-quality, peer reviewed international journal
  • Expert knowledge in one or more of the following areas would be considered an advantage:
    • Analysis of cell signaling with biochemistry and molecular biology approaches
    • Genetics and cell biology
    • CRISPR-based genome editing
    • RNA-Seq, GRO-Seq, Chip-Seq
    • Analysis of large-scape proteomic and/or genomic dataset
    • Genome integrity, chromatin biology, gene transcription
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written
  • An analytical aptitude for devising innovative scientific or technical solutions
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm, motivation, flexibility and confidence
  • Prior experience in high resolution mass spectrometry is not essential

Place of employment and work

The employment is at CPR (, University of Copenhagen, located in central Copenhagen. The research environment at CPR is ambitious and international, with approx. 30 different nationalities currently represented. The Center comprises modern laboratories, supercomputer resources and state-of-the-art facilities within protein science, including microscopy, cryoelectron microscopy, and the next generation sequencing. Terms of salary and employment

Salary, pension and terms of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Academics Central organization. Currently, the monthly salary is around 32,000-33,700 DKK (around 4,200-4,500 €) plus 17.1 % in pension contribution.

The Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) have agreed on a protocol that makes it possible for all international researchers employed by the University to achieve a pension exemption, where the pension will be paid as salary. Duration: The duration of the positions is 2 years with a possible extension for up to two years (depending on the performance, and previous employment at the University of Copenhagen).
