PhD fellow in Geobiology

Section of Geobiology and Minerals at the Natural History Museum of Denmark
Faculty of Science
University of Copenhagen

The Natural History Museum of Denmark (Copenhagen) is offering a PhD scholarship commencing September 1st, 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Project description
The PhD is part of the Dahl research group whose overarching goal is to understand the co-evolution of life and the global environment through geological history. The research within this initiative is carried out in collaboration with researchers at the stable isotope laboratory at the Natural History Museum of Denmark and international collaborators.

The purpose of the project is to evaluate the global oxygenation state of the oceans during critical time periods in the early history of land plants (480-300 million years ago). The research will be mainly experimental working on stable isotope fractionation of uranium in sedimentary rocks, sample collection and sample preparation, but may also include numerical geochemical modelling.

Many geochemical proxies have been applied to record the oxygenation state of past oceans. Uranium isotopes have a promising potential as they can be applied to carbonate rocks simultaneously with other isotopic proxies for changes in the global marine biogeochemical cycles (e.g., 13C, 34S). We wish to document that uranium isotopes can record the chemical composition of contemporaneous seawater and that the signal was changing systematically during periods when ecologically distinct flora invaded land.

We expect the successful candidate to cooperate on joint publications with our research group and contribute to publications and activities. There will be an opportunity to spend part of the scholarship as a visiting scholar abroad.

Supervisor is Ass. Professor Tais W. Dahl, The Natural History Museum of Denmark, University of Copenhagen. For more detailed information please contact Professor Tais W. Dahl at email: tais.dahl@snm.ku.dk
