Two PhD Fellowships in Methods for Reduced Antibiotic Use in Pig Herds

Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences
Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences
University of Copenhagen

Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (IVH), Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at University of Copenhagen is offering two PhD Fellowships in Methods for Reduced Antibiotic Use in Pig Herds to commence on 1 February 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter. The positions is limited to three years.

Information about the Department can be found at http://ivh.ku.dk/english/.

Background
Antibiotic consumption in pig herds is considered a cause of antibiotic resistance in human pathogens. Therefore, authorities and the pig industry have developed initiatives such as the Yellow Card Initiative in order to reduce the consumption of antibiotics. In addition, a market for pork from pigs raised without antibiotics has emerged. The present project will focus on creating the knowledge basis for a pig production with highly reduced antibiotic consumption.

Project description
The project will include research on methods to raise pigs without antibiotics. This will include studies of methods for election of robust pigs at birth, handling of enteric diseases without antibiotics, use of autogenous vaccines, probiotics, management and feed interventions, etc. For those pigs that have to be treated, it will be investigated whether treatment dose, period and strategy can be changed in order to achieve a reduced antibiotic use in pig herds.
