PhD fellowship in Cellular Stress Signaling at Center for Healthy Aging

PhD fellowship in Cellular Stress Signaling at Center for Healthy Aging

The University of Copenhagen, Center for Healthy Aging, Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine (ICMM), invites applications for a three-year PhD fellowship from candidates who hold a relevant Master degree or its equivalent. Previous molecular or cell biological experience is welcome. The successful candidate will work on her/his own project in collaboration with other members of the team.
The position is available from January 1st, 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Brief project description
The healthy life of the human organism depends on the longterm fitness of its smallest basal constituents, our cells. When deregulated, the pathologic accumulation of genetic mutations and malfunctioning macromolecules alters or compromises cellular function to promote cancer or premature ageing. Conversely, normal ageing of the human organism is associated with the time-dependent decrease in cellular fitness, caused by gradual loss of genomic integrity, and accumulation of misfolded and dysfunctional macromolecules.
To protect cells from harmful environmental effects, all organisms have developed elaborate surveillance and response mechanisms to counteract such threats. The aim of my research group is to understand the molecular details of these pathways, with an emphasis on MAP kinase induced cellular stress responses. Such work is expected to uncover novel insights into the all-important mechanisms of cellular maintenance and adaptation, which may ultimately be exploited therapeutically to prevent or remedy aging-related diseases. The precise contents of the PhD project will be defined through discussions with the selected candidate.
The work will be supervised by Professor Simon Bekker-Jensen,  Center for Healthy Aging. For further information on my group’s research,  http://icmm.ku.dk/english/research-groups/bekker-jensen-group/ or inquire directly via e-mail (sbj@sund.ku.dk) or phone (+45 20204993).

The Department
The Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine focuses on basic cellular and molecular biological processes, their regulation and their significance for cell function, interaction and organization in tissues. The Department offers comprehensive undergraduate and graduate teaching programs spanning cell biology, genetics and basic human biology, including chemistry, biochemistry, physiology, as well as anatomy. The position also carries an obligation to conduct some undergraduate teaching and associated examinations. You can read more at www.icmm.ku.dk  and http://healthyaging.ku.dk/ .

Terms of employment:
The successful PhD candidate will be offered a full-time position for a period of three years, contingent on a satisfactory performance, with the specific intent that it results in a PhD degree and scientific publications.

It is a prerequisite for the appointment as a PhD fellow that the person concerned  can be registered as a PhD fellow according to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation Executive Order no 18 of 14. January 2008. Information about the PhD programs at the Faculty of Health Science can be found at www.healthscience.ku.dk/phd

Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organization.
