PhD fellow in Analytical Chemistry and Plant Nutrition

Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering a PhD scholarship in Analytical Chemistry and Plant Nutrition commencing on 1 August 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter. 
Description of the scientific environment 
The project will be conducted at the Plant and Soil Science Section as well as Copenhagen Plant Science Centre, Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences. The successful candidate will be affiliated with the research groups in Plant Nutrition and Soil Science and will collaborate with the associated staff members. The analytical facilities for chromatographic, multi-elemental and stable isotope analyses as well as greenhouses, climate chambers and field trial facilities for plant growth experiments within the section will be utilized for the project.

Project description 
The main objective of the successful applicant is to develop analytical methods based on stable isotope ratio analysis for investigating nutrient availability and utilization in modern plant production systems. Stable isotope analysis is already well-established as a powerful analytical tool in plant and soil science. It most often relies on enrichments with stable isotopes (e.g. 15N) to obtain information about the contribution of different nutrient sources to nutrient uptake but, at the natural abundance level, stable isotope analysis is much less applied. Furthermore, the applicability of compound-specific stable isotope analysis for tracing nutrients during biological processes in soil and through uptake and translocation in plants needs to be further explored. The successful applicant is thus expected to conduct research that bridges fundamental plant nutrition and soil science by development of novel analytical methods based on isotope ratio mass spectrometry. 
The PhD fellow will: 
  • Develop and validate novel analytical methods for compound-specific stable isotope analysis of essential nutrients in soil and plants.  
  • Investigate the impact of biological processes in soil, nutrient uptake and translocation in plants on the isotope signature of specific chemical compounds.  
  • Apply the developed methods in case-studies aimed at studying nutrient availability and utilization in different plant production systems.

Job description 
The position is available for a 3-year period and your key tasks as a PhD student at SCIENCE are: 
  • To manage and carry through your research project 
  • Attend PhD courses 
  • Write scientific articles and your PhD thesis 
  • Teach and disseminate your research 
  • To stay at an external research institution for a few months, preferably abroad 
  • Work for the department 
Formal requirements  
Applicants should hold an MSc degree in Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Agronomy, Plant Nutrition or Soil Science with good results and good English skills. As criteria for the assessment of your qualifications emphasis will also be laid on previous publications (if any) and relevant work experience. Analytical competences within chromatography and mass spectrometry will be positively evaluated. In addition, experience with analytical method development, data analysis, sampling and sample preparation is advantageous. 
Terms of employment  
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.  
Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.  
The starting salary is currently at a minimum DKK 317.448 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 43.848). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
