2 Fully Funded (3-year) PhD positions in Information Retrieval at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark
At the Information Retrieval Lab of the Department of Computer Science, University of Copenhagen we develop models and algorithms that allow computers to retrieve and analyse large-scale text. Applications of our work include search engines, recommender systems, text understanding and analytics.
We are searching for PhD students interested in pushing the boundaries of Information Retrieval with us.
You will be working as part of the Quantum Information Access and Retrieval Theory (QUARTZ) European Training Network, awarded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. This network consists of 7 universities, 5 industrial partners, and will educate a total of 14 PhD students through common dedicated training activities. The Information Retrieval Lab has two open PhD positions:

Why do a PhD in Copenhagen?
The Information Retrieval Lab at the University of Copenhagen offers a research environment with much freedom: to a large extent, you shape the research you work on and the ideas you pursue. The lab aspires to be a top research environment for Information Retrieval that bridges theory, empirical studies and industrial outreach. Currently two post docs and 7 PhD students work at the Information Retrieval Lab.
- Master degree in Computer Science, Mathematics or related field
- Strong programming skills
- Strong mathematical background
- Proficiency in spoken and written English
Additionally, candidates need to stand out in at least one of the following key criteria of excellence used for the assessment:
- Grades that document an outstanding academic record
- Scientific publication(s) in recognized, peer-reviewed venues
- Awards and honors
- Professional qualifications and work experience
Terms of salary and employment
Terms of appointment and payment are in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State. The starting salary is currently at a minimum DKK 309,109 (April 2016 level) including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 42,699) + mobility allowance and family allowance (where applicable) as part of the MSCA programme.
The scholarship requires a Master's degree in computer science or a field providing equivalent qualifications (see above), at the time of taking up the position. The appointment is for a period of 3 years and is expected to lead to a PhD dissertation. The scholarship can be commenced as of June 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter. Since the scholarship is part of the MSCA European Training Network programme the candidate must not have a PhD degree or more than 4 years of research experience at the time of applying and cannot have lived in Denmark for more than 12 months in the past three years at the time of applying.

- Master thesis as PDF (final or in draft; if draft, then state the expected submission date)
- Assessment of master thesis (final or provisional if the thesis is not submitted)
- Reference letters from two referees (signed and dated)
- Transcripts of grades, documenting an outstanding academic record. Unless the candidate’s diploma and transcripts of grades are in Danish or English, the candidate must procure a certified translation. Furthermore, the candidate must include official information about the grading scale.
- PDFs of any scientific publications that you have co-authored.
The deadline for applications is April 30 2017 (Midnight CET). Late applications are not considered.
Procedures and shortlisting
After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Interview Committee. Afterwards an assessment committee will be appointed to evaluate the selected applications. The applicants will be notified of the composition of the committee and the final selection of a successful candidate will be made by the Head of Department, based on the recommendations of the assessment committee and the interview committee.
The main criterion for selection will be the research potential of the applicant and the above mentioned skills. The successful candidate will then be requested to formally apply for enrolment as a PhD student at the PhD school of Science.
