Associate Professorship in Molecular Microbiology 211-0523

Associate Professorship in Molecular Microbiology
Department of Biology
University of Copenhagen

The Department of Biology has about 500 staff and is among the largest departments at the University of Copenhagen (UCHP). The department covers a broad set of scientific disciplines spanning from ecology over biochemistry/molecular biology to cancer research. University rankings place the field of biology and biochemistry at the University of Copenhagen first in Denmark and among the top 30 universities internationally. The research performance is outstanding with a high scientific output in high-impact journals. In addition to a PhD-programme, the Department offers three BSc study programmes (Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular biomedicine) and four MSc study programmes (Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular biomedicine, Bioinformatics) with close to 2000 students.

The Associate Professor will be affiliated with the Section for Functional Genomics. The section is quite large (7 professors and 6 associate professors) and conducts research related to basic processes of biology with a methodological emphasis on genetics. The section embraces four broadly defined research themes: Plant immunity, Archaeal Biology, Bacterial Genetics and Genome Dynamics. The present permanent position was negotiated as part of a contract between the Danish National Research Foundation, the Novo Nordisk Foundation and the University of Copenhagen that generated the Centre of Excellence for Bacterial Stress Response and Persistence (BASP). It is expected that the successful candidate will join the BASP Centre as a core Principal Investigator and, accordingly, will receive start-up support in the form of a postdoctoral fellow (3 years), a PhD-stipend, and limited running costs, as well as being allowed to have full access to the infrastructure of the Centre. The BASP Centre consists of seven research groups, four of which are located in close physical proximity at the Department of Biology, one is located at the Niels Bohr Institute and one at theDepartment of Veterinary Disease Biology and Animal Sciences, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. Finally, one research group studying protein structures is located at the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Aarhus University. The research conducted by the Centre aims to unravel novel molecular mechanisms underlying bacterial stress responses and antibiotic tolerance and resistance.

Description of the position
The Associate Professor is expected to consolidate and expand the research program of the BASP Centre within the field of molecular microbiology.
Duties also include teaching and supervision of students at undergraduate, graduate and PhD-levels. The successful applicant is further expected to participate in practical and theoretical course development. The position will involve teaching in the field of bacterial genetics, physiology and biochemistry, as well as other tasks requested by the department. Qualifications/profile
The position requires a strong research and teaching record within the field of molecular microbiology. Candidates working in the area of basic molecular mechanisms underlying bacterial stress survival are favoured. The preferred candidate´s research profile should complement ongoing research activities in the Section. Experience with global analyses, such as deep RNA sequencing, global gene expression, ribosome profiling, proteomics or similar is an advantage but not a requirement.

In addition to a PhD degree, candidates must have a significant track-record (minimum 4-5 years post-graduate experience) of successful external research funding as well as a significant publication record in high-level, international, peer-reviewed ISI journals. Candidates are required to have documented university level competencies in delivering high-quality undergraduate/graduate teaching and must be able to explain and reflect upon own teaching practice and portfolio. Formal pedagogical training or supervision equivalent to the University of Copenhagen teacher training program for assistant professors is expected. For further information regarding qualification requirements, please refer to the criteria for the hiring and promotion of permanent academic staff at Department of Biology at http://www2.bio.ku.dk/docs/BIO-criteria-for-positions.pdf.

Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, original scientific production at an international level, including contributions to developments in their field, as well as their documented teaching qualifications. It is expected that the successful candidate will establish him/herself as an independent researcher.  Managerial and out-reach qualifications of applicants including ability to attract external funding will also be considered.
