Postdoc in Mammalian Behavioural Metagenomics

The Natural History Museum of Denmark is looking for a motivated postdoc for a period of 2 years as part of a newly funded project to explore the effect of microbiome on mammalian behaviour. In this project, funded by the Villum Foundation, we plan to extract and characterise the microbial communities within various species in light of specific behavioural phenotypes. Critical parts of the project include the handling of wild live mammals, as well as the laboratory and computational methods relevant to microbial metagenomics. The project is lead by Professor Tom Gilbert in the section for Evolutionary Genomics.  
 
Main tasks 
  • Capture and sample faeces and gut content from small wild mammals in various geographic locations.  
  • Develop and implement laboratory workflows for generating metagenomic data from such samples.  
  • Bioinformatic characterization of the microbiome community within the metagenomic data.  
  • Participate in publications on laboratory and bioinformatic workflows for reference data generation  
Mandatory Qualifications 
  • PhD degree  
  • Documented experience in fieldwork and the handling of wild mammals  
  • Documented experience in animal physiology  
  • Documented experience in the laboratory and informatics skills underlying Illumina based metagenome sequencing and analysis
  • Documented experience in the laboratory and informatics skills underlying the analysis of environmental DNA (eDNA), in particular in the context of dietary analyses  
  • Documented training on animal experimentation functions A, B, C and D, according to the EU Directive 2010/63/EU  
  • Documented track record in publishing peer review papers in leading international journals  
  • Documented evidence of independently leading research projects  
  • Fluency in English (written, reading, spoken)  

Other Qualifications of Considerable Interest 

  • Previous experience working in a Natural History Museum  
  • Other European language skills, in particular Spanish/Basque  
  • Experience in the teaching and mentoring of students

Terms of employment 
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.  
 
Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.  
 
The starting salary is currently up to DKK 413.717 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 70.746). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
