Assistant Professor within Poultry Diseases

Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (IVH), Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at University of Copenhagen, wishes to appoint an Assistant Professor within Poultry Diseases from 1 March 2018. The position is limited for two years.

Aim
The candidate will be part of several on-going research projects within the area of poultry diseases. The main focus will be on an EU project where the use of phages as treatment for E. coli infections in poultry will be investigated by in vivo studies. Innovationsfonden as part of a European ANIHWA ERA-Net initiative finances the project. Other projects include pathogenesis studies of keel bone fractures by the use of pathology/histopathology and scanning techniques. These studies are funded by Fjerkræafgiftsfonden.  
 
In addition, infection studies with poultry pathogens using different infection models are planned within the two-year period. The projects are carried out with national and international partners and the candidate will be part of this collaborative environment.  
 
It is expected that the future Assistant Professor will actively participate in the scientific development of the project and applicative aspect of the research.  
 
Job description  
The main duties will be research within the areas stated above. The position as Assistant Professor includes obligation to teach and supervise students and to undertake formal training in teaching at university level.  
 
The appointee should have following qualifications:  
  • A strong background in veterinary pathology
  • A proven ability to conduct experimental infections (and licensed to do so)
  • Solid knowledge of health problems within the poultry production 
Qualification requirements
In connection with the appointment to the post, special importance will be attached to the applicant having the professional and personal qualifications stated below: 
  • DVM with documented scientific qualifications as PhD or equivalent within veterinary microbiology or pathology  
  • A documented scientific track record in microbiology in relation to pathogenic bacteria AND pathology  
  • Experience with experimental infection models  
  • Supervisor/teaching skills  
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written  
  • Fluency in English. University of Copenhagen generally encourages employees who do not speak Danish to acquire a working knowledge of the language  
  • The applicant is required to be enterprising and to possess good interpersonal and collaborative skills  
  • Employment as Assistant Professor requires 2-4 years of previous experience as a Postdoc within veterinary microbiology or pathology
Terms of employment
Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organisations. The position is covered by the “Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff at the Universities” of June 28, 2013.  
 
The gross basic salary range for Assistant Professors is DKK 32,745 to DKK 34,476 per month (level 6 to 8). To the basic salary, a supplement could be negotiated, dependent on the candidate’s experience and qualifications. The employer will pay an additional 17.1 % monthly contribution to pension.
 
The position is time limited to a two-year period.

The further process  
Shortlist: After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorised recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Appointments Committee. All applicants are then immediately notified whether an expert assessment committee has passed their application for assessment. Selected applicants are notified of the composition of the committee and each applicant has the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that relates to the applicant him/herself. Assessment: The selected applications will be assessed according to the Ministerial Order no. 242 of 13 March 2012 on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Universities and the University of Copenhagen’s guidelines 2013. The Assessment Committee makes a non-prioritized assessment of the academic qualifications and experience with respect to the mentioned area of research, techniques, skills and other requirements listed in the advertisement.
