Postdoc in Glial Biology to Center for Translational Neuromedicine - Division of Glial Disease and Therapeutics

A Postdoc position is available at the Center for Translational Neuromedicine (CTN) at the University of Copenhagen, located at the Panum Institute. The position is open for 2 years with the possibility of extension.

Description of the research team:
The research focus in the division is on the basic biology of glial cells in the central nervous system, specifically astrocytes, and their role in several neurological and neuropsychiatric diseases, including stroke, spinal cord injury, epilepsy, tremor, ALS, depression and schizophrenia.

Description of the project:
Most neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease (AD), are linked with the accumulation of misfolded or hyperphosphorylated proteins. The discovery of a novel macroscopic clearance system – the brain glymphatics – posit the existence of a functional drainage system that can transport proteins and extracellular fluid from the brain in a manner similar to peripheral organs. For this position, the specific focus is the determination of glymphatics efflux pathways – as well as its connections to the peripheral lymphatics.

Our research is aimed at providing new insights into how normal aging and AD affect
glymphatic clearance. By the identification of bottlenecks on glymphatic clearance, we sought to delineate therapeutic strategies to ameliorate clearance and minimize neural function impairment.

We are looking for a ‪highly motivated person to perform primarily surgeries in rodents (mice and rats) in order to track glymphatic dynamics and efflux pathways, histology and imaging processing.

The workflow
Rodent microsurgery
Glymphatic system analysis: injection of CSF tracers, tissue harvesting and histology
Optical (epifluorescence and confocal) and electron microscopy analysis
Tissue clearing and image processing

Qualifications
We expect you to be a highly motivated and ambitious scientist with a PhD degree in Neurobiology or equivalent

We expect you have thorough experience within:
Glial neurobiology
Stereotaxic surgeries
Neuroanatomy
Cell biology
Experience with image processing of large volume data (advanced knowledge of FIJI/ImageJ and Imaris)
Histology, immunochemistry
Molecular biology: DNA and RNA isolation and purification, DNA cloning, in situ hybridization (ISH and FISH), protein analysis, ELISA
Epifluorescence, confocal and electron microscopy

Good communication skills in English, both orally and written, is a prerequisite.

Place of employment
The employment is at CTN, located at Panum Institute at the University of Copenhagen. The center is newly established and has well equipped laboratories with excellent facilities within neuroscience.

Terms of employment
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff. Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.

Application procedure:
The application must be submitted in English by clicking “Apply online” below.
It must include the following:
Curriculum vitae
Brief statement of research experience and interests
Full publication list
Reference contacts

Application deadline:
31 December 2017

After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Appointments Committee.
