Assistant Professor in Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging

A position as Assistant Professor is available at the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences (KU-SUND) at the University of Copenhagen, starting on 1 July 2018 or as soon as possible hereafter. The position is full time and limited to a 4-year period.

Job description
Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging in the University is organised as a section within the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences. The section is equipped with Digital Radiology, Computer Tomography, low field MRI, Ultrasonography and Scintigraphy imaging equipment.  
 
The section currently consists of one Professor, one Associate Professor, one Veterinarian undergoing residency training and one board eligible Veterinarian (part time). In addition, the section provides hip, elbow, and shoulder screening services to the Danish Kennel Club via two part time positions. Four technical staff members support all aspects of the work of the section. 
 
The veterinary imaging section contributes to the teaching of undergraduates taking the DVM degree course, to postgraduate masters students, and to PhD students and residents of the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic imaging and other European Board of Veterinary Specialisation’s colleges. Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging is an internationally recognised research discipline within veterinary sciences. It is seen as being essential to the continued successful development of the Department's research, teaching and public service activities.  
 
The section provides clinical service to the two veterinary teaching hospitals within the Department. These hospitals are located at two campuses (Frederiksberg and Taastrup). The work is cross-species and includes diagnostic imaging in small companion animals, in horses, and to a lesser degree in other species as well. The work also includes research imaging in a number of other species, particularly in pigs.  
 
There is a strong research ethos within the section. Members of the section work as research partners with colleagues both within the Department, and outside the Department but within the University of Copenhagen. In addition, the section works with other researchers in Denmark and beyond.  
 
In all of these activities, research, teaching and clinical service, the Assistant Professor will be expected to take initiative in advancing the work of the section. In addition, the successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the on-going success of the Department via committee participation and by other means.  
 
In considering applications for the assistant professorship, the main emphasis will be on the applicant´s ability to document a high level of original scientific work at an international level within the area of veterinary imaging.  
 
The duties of the Assistant Professor will primarily consist of:  
  • Research within the area of veterinary imaging, including obligations with regard to publication/scientific communication. Applicants with a research focus within quantitative aspects of medical image analysis are preferred  
  • Research-based teaching with associated examination duties  
  • Communication of research results to the public  
  • Peer assessment  
  • Guiding and assisting users of the service provided by the section  
  • The provision of a veterinary diagnostic imaging service  
  • Contributing to the efforts and initiatives of the section and department in regard to communication with the wider public  
  • Successfully completing the university training programme for Assistant Professors 
Required qualifications
  • A PhD degree and/or Diploma Status with European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging or similar qualifications in relation to the above subject area  
  • Research and teaching experience within the field of the of work encompassed by the position  
  • A DVM with license to practice in Denmark, or be qualified and obtain this within 6 months  
  • Experience in the provision of clinical diagnostic imaging services  
  • Initiative, a strong motivation, and excellent scientific skills  
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written  
  • If Danish is not the first language, the applicant is expected to obtain sufficient Danish skills within 1-2 years 
The Assistant Professor is also required to be enterprising and to possess good interpersonal skills.
 
Terms of employment
Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organisations. The position is covered by the “Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff at the Universities” of June 28, 2013.
 
The gross basic salary range for Assistant Professors is DKK 33,224 to DKK 34,980 per month (level 6 to 8). To the basic salary, a supplement could be negotiated, dependent on the candidate’s experience and qualifications. The employer will pay an additional 17.1 % monthly contribution to pension.
 
The position is time limited to a 4-year period.

The further process
Shortlist: After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorised recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Appointments Committee. All applicants are then immediately notified whether an expert assessment committee has passed their application for assessment. Selected applicants are notified of the composition of the committee and each applicant has the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that relates to the applicant him/herself. Assessment: The selected applications will be assessed according to the Ministerial Order no. 242 of 13 March 2012 on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Universities and the University of Copenhagen’s guidelines 2013.
