Post doc position in root development of deep rooted crop species and intercropping systems
Increased exploitation of subsoil resources by crops is one option for sustainable intensification of food production as it allows increased production without adding further resources. In the “DeepFrontier” project we develop and study cropping systems with deeper root growth and resource use than current cropping systems. The focus is on soil layers from 1 to 5 m depth, below the main root zone of most current crops, but within depths which can be reached by plant roots. Little is known of the potential of deep root growth by different plant species grown as field crops, partly because of the difficulties of studying deep roots. The post doc project will include studies of rooting depth of a range of species and how this may be affected by management using minirhizotrons inserted to a depth of 5 m. In addition, studies of intercropping systems including deep and shallow rooted species will be conducted. Finally, the work will include studies of water and nutrient uptake from deep soil layers. The research will use our newly developed facilities for studies of deep rooting, and include methods such as minirhizotrons, water sensors and nutrient and water tracers.
Our research environment is friendly, vibrant and international, boasting scientists and students with diverse academic backgrounds. The PLEN root research facilities are located at the Taastrup Campus outside Copenhagen, and the successful candidate will be working in the Crop Physiology and Production Systems research group at PLEN in close collaboration with Associate professor Dorte Bodin Dresbøll and Professor Kristian Thorup-Kristensen.
The postdoc’s duties will include research within cropping systems and intercropping with deep rooted crops. The post may also include performance of other duties.
We expect you to be a highly motivated and highly ambitious scientist and prefer applicants with the following competencies:
- PhD in agronomy, biology, or other relevant area with focus crop physiology and production
- Professional competencies within crop production, crop rotation and intercropping
- Ability to conduct independent research and analysis
- Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues to achieve common goals
- Good communication skills in English, both oral and written

Terms of employment
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.
Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.
The starting salary is currently up to DKK 405,501 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 69,341). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
