Copenhagen Plant Science Centre (CPSC) at the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences wishes to appoint a highly motivated postdoc in the field of non-coding transcription commencing on 1st September 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter. The period of employment is 2 years with the possibility for extension.

Description of the scientific environment
The Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences constitutes a stimulating and international research environment. The current position is financially supported by a Hallas Møller Investigator Award to Assistant Professor Sebastian Marquardt. The position will be located at CPSC, a newly established research centre at the University of Copenhagen. The aim of CPSC is to create a cross-disciplinary scientific environment that spans scientists investigating molecular mechanisms and biotechnological applications.

Project description
The Marquardt lab is interested in understanding the functional significance of abundant yet mysterious non-coding sequences present in genomes. We employ cutting edge budding yeast technology to identify the molecular mechanisms controlling transcription of non-coding sequences into non-coding RNA. We disrupt these regulatory mechanisms in complex organisms such as Arabidopsis to study the functional roles of non-coding transcription, particularly in environmental responses.  

We are looking for a postdoc to advance our understanding of the molecular mechanisms and biological roles of long non-coding RNA transcription. We recently elucidated the genetic architecture of divergent non-coding transcription in budding yeast. You have the opportunity to design, perform and analyze Next-Generation Sequencing experiments to identify the genome-wide effect and mechanism of identified regulators. You will draw from an excellent research environment in the areas of RNA biology, chromatin Biology and transcription to design and conduct these experiments. You will test how the molecular mechanisms affecting regulation by long-coding RNA transcription identified budding yeast translate into higher organisms. Our progress with gene repression by the process of long non-coding RNA transcription in Arabidopsis indicates how identified molecular mechanisms may be linked broadly to biological effects. Your results will inform experiments of our lab and collaborators, we are therefore looking for a postdoc that stimulates productive and synergistic interactions with the lab members. You are working on the edge of current knowledge, and will keep up to date with the relevant literature to drive this project into the most interesting direction.

Job description
Apart from conducting research in the mentioned research area, your duties will include supervision of students, drafting of manuscripts, attendance of research conferences, and participation in teaching activities. The post may also include performance of other duties.

Qualification requirements
Successful candidates will have an excellent track record documented and will be highly motivated. An important criteria will be enthusiasm for the research area. A strong background in at least one of the following subjects will be beneficial: molecular biology, protein and RNA biochemistry, genomics and/or chromatin biology. Relevant research expertise in yeast or plant science is desirable, such as:
  • Experience with Matlab, R or equivalent programs to handle large datasets
  • Experience with biochemistry and genetics
  • Next-Generation Sequencing-based strategies to analyze chromatin structure or transcription.
Additionally a qualified applicant must have:
  • A PhD degree by the commencement of the project
  • Proven ability to present and publish research data
  • Excellent inter-personal and communication skills/ability to build good working relations
  • Submitted a concise research plan that fits to the interests of the lab
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Interest in developing fellowship and grant writing skills. 
Terms of employment
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.

The starting salary is currently up to DKK 408,730 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 69,893). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
