Associate Professor of RNA and Chromatin Biology (211-0507)

Associate Professor of "RNA and Chromatin Biology"
Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences
Faculty of Science
University of Copenhagen

The Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen invites applications for a time unlimited position as Associate Professor in the area of "RNA and Chromatin Biology" from 1st of November 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The vast majority of DNA sequences in higher organisms correspond to non-coding DNA, whereas the number of protein coding genes is similar between a complex organism, e.g. a plant and much simpler organisms, e.g. a worm. Transcriptional activity in these regions results in long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) and is particularly sensitive to cellular environments. This environmental sensitivity of lncRNA expression suggests molecular roles of lncRNA transcription in the adaptation of single cells and organisms to changing environments.

The transient information provided by lncRNA can be transformed into a longer-term molecular memory systems through effects on chromatin packing in chromatin structure. The establishment of gene regulation by lncRNA transcription and cellular memory systems draws from the fields of “RNA Biology” and “Epigenetics”.

The section for Molecular Plant Biology aims to establish an Associate Professor position in “RNA and Chromatin Biology” within plants to unlock novel avenues to promote plant yield during environmental change. A key feature of this position will be the development of genetic strategies to link lncRNA transcription to regulatory functions. It is expected that genomics technologies to map transcriptional activity, lncRNA and chromatin structure within plants are developed to inform the research. We envision interplay between genome-wide approaches and quantitative single-cell Biology. Successful candidates will be able to document expertise in lncRNA transcription research in plants and at least one additional model to inform their research projects and amplify impact.

Qualifications in the following areas are required:

  • Expertise in chromatin Biology
  • Next-generation sequencing approaches to map lncRNA transcription
  • Functional Genomics of lncRNA transcription
  • Expert knowledge of quantitative single cell biology
  • Experience with plant environmental interactions
  • Documented excellence in lncRNA research in plants and at least one additional model
  • Experience/interest in science management
  • Experience with academic and/or cross-sector grant applications

Applicants are required to have university level teaching experience, documented teaching competencies and must be able to explain and reflect upon own teaching practice and portfolio. Formal pedagogical training or supervision equivalent to the University of Copenhagen teacher training programme for assistant professors is required.

Duties include the applicant’s own research, development of the field, assessment tasks, grant applications, and research management such as supervision and training of research fellows and other staff. The successful applicant must also teach, supervise, prepare and participate in examinations, and fulfill other tasks requested by the Department.

Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, original scientific production at an international level, including contributions to developments in their field, as well as their documented teaching qualifications. Managerial and out-reach qualifications of applicants including ability to attract external funding will also be considered.
