The University of Copenhagen seeks to appoint a professor to the Global Health Section at the Department of Public Health to commence as soon as possible. Information on the Department of Public Health can be found at: https://www.sund.ku.dk/.

Our research

The position is based at the Global Health Section, Department of Public Health. The research and expertise of the Global Health Section cover a range of interrelated global health challenges and solutions with a strong focus on health equity, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Our current research areas include communicable and non-communicable diseases, global mental health, sexual and reproductive health and rights, humanitarian action and disaster, as well as health systems research. We place significant emphasis on transdisciplinary and inter-sectoral research involving educational-, institutional-, and/or research-capacity strengthening.

The section is primarily responsible for two educational programs; a Master of Science in Global Health and a professional Master in Disaster Management both taught in English. The Section staff also teach and supervise across the Department of Public Health and the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. The Sections is a highly interdisciplinary workplace with great focus on collegiality, teamwork, diversity, and mutual support.

Job description
We aim to hire a professor with the ability to connect research activities across academic disciplines and other stakeholders, while strengthening global health research, education and outreach at the University of Copenhagen and beyond. When considering applications for the professorship, the main emphasis will be on the applicant's ability to document original scientific work at the highest international level within the area of global health.

The responsibilities of the professor will primarily be to:

  • Contribute to the international profile of the Global Health Section and the Department of Public Health by strengthening of our research and educational programmes
  • Develop and produce novel, high quality research outputs – both as lead and in close collaboration with the Section and international partners
  • Ensure external funding in equitable partnership with academic, humanitarian and other public/private collaborators
  • Commit to a continuous high output of research-based publications in academic, policy, and practice fora
  • Provide research leadership, including mentorship and supervision of early career researchers, bachelor, master and PhD students
  • Provide leadership on innovative approaches to research and education within the field of Global Health
  • Engage in course development and leadership as well as research based teaching and examination across the educational programmes at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences
  • Contribute to the administrative and organisational responsibilities of the Global Health Section and the Department of Public Health
  • Share knowledge with society at large, including participation in public debate at national and international levels.

Required qualifications
Six overall criteria apply for professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for the overall assessment of candidates. Furthermore, each applicant must be able to document:

  • A strategic vision for the global health field
  • High degree of original academic production at an international level, including considerable contributions to the development and standing of the field of global health
  • Research experience in one or more subject areas related to the ongoing research at the global health section
  • Management of research and other functions, e.g. engagement in external academic activities, as well as knowledge and technology transfer across the boundaries of academic disciplines and practice/policy sectors
  • Experience working across cultures and contexts
  • Provision of research-based teaching within the field of global health
  • Experience working with educational and/or research capacity strengthening at institutional level
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Desired qualification

  • Experience in designing, implementing and/or assessing the effects of health interventions in low-resource settings
  • Experience with advocacy and broader research dissemination


Terms of employment
The position is permanent and the average weekly working hours are 37 hours per week.

Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Taxation and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organisations.

The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities 2020.

After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Appointments Committee.  All applicants are then immediately notified whether their application has been passed for assessment. The Dean then appoints an expert assessment committee in order to assess the selected applicants for the specific post. Selected applicants are notified of the composition of the committee and each applicant has the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that relates to the applicant him/herself.
