PhD followship in MS-based proteomics at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research
A PhD fellowship is available in the Nielsen group at The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research (CPR – www.cpr.ku.dk). The Center has been established at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, to promote basic and applied discovery research on human proteins of medical relevance. The Center comprises a wide range of expertise and resources including proteomics, structural biology and characterization of disease mechanisms.
The Nielsen group is lead by Group Leader Dr. Michael L. Nielsen, and by joining our team, you will be part of a young and dynamic team consisting of international researchers. The Nielsen group focuses on developing novel proteomics methods & technologies for studying the cellular outcomes at a ‘systems-level’, with the aim to understand cellular phenotypes and diseases. To this end, we employ cutting-edge mass spectrometry (MS)-based technologies for unbiased identification and quantification of post-translational modifications (PTMs).

Focus of the Project
The PhD fellow is expected to use the cutting-edge proteomic technologies developed in the Nielsen group for dynamic and temporal characterization of ADP-ribosylation in mammalian cell systems, and to perform biological follow-up experiments on novel and interesting findings derived from proteomic screens. ADP-ribosylation has emerged as a vital PTM in many cellular processes, including DNA damage, Chromosome organization, Translation, protein localization, and others.
The ideal candidate is expected to investigate the cellular roles of ADP-ribosylation in the DNA damage response, and should be able to conduct independent and creative research, demonstrate scientific productivity, and show good inter-personal and communication skills.
- Candidates are required to have a Master degree in biochemistry, molecular biology or similar prior to starting.
- An analytical aptitude of devising innovative scientific or technical solutions.
- Prior experience in research fields related to ADP-ribosylation and/or the DNA damage response would be a distinct advantage.
- Knowledge in one or more of the following area(s) would be considered an advantage: genetics and cell biology, cell signaling, or chromatin biology.
- Prior experience in high resolution mass spectrometry is not essential, but would be considered an advantage.
- Knowledge in bioinformatics and large-scale data analysis, and skills in statistical computational environment such as R and Python will be considered a distinct advantage, but not a requirement.
- Good communication skills, both oral and written.
- Strong motivation and excellent scientific skills are essential.
Start date: Spring 2020.
Place of employment and work
The employment is at CPR (www.cpr.ku.dk), University of Copenhagen, located in central Copenhagen. The research environment at CPR is vibrant, ambitious, and international, with approx. 30 different nationalities currently represented. The Center comprises modern laboratories and state-of-the-art facilities within protein science. Seminars with high-profile international speakers and regular internal research seminars are organized at the Center.
Terms of salary and employment
The PhD fellowship is financially supported by the CPR and the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences and is for a period of three years.
The research project will be carried out in collaboration with other groups at the center. The candidate must have equivalent to a Danish Master degree. It is a prerequisite that the candidate is successfully enrolled as a PhD fellow at the Graduate School of Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, in accordance to the provision of the Executive Order no. 18 of 14 January 2008 regarding the PhD degree.
The PhD fellowship must be completed in accordance with The Ministerial Order on the PhD programme (2013) and the Faculty’s rules on achieving the degree. Salary, pension and terms of employment are in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State. Depending on seniority, the monthly salary begins at DKK 27,362 / approx. EUR 3.648 (October 2019-level) plus an employer paid pension contribution.
The Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) have agreed on a protocol that makes it possible for all international researchers employed by the University to achieve a pension exemption, where the pension will be paid as salary. The further process
