Laboratory Manager for the “Advanced Materials Characterization Laboratory” at Department of Chemistry

Department of Chemistry at Faculty of Science, the University of Copenhagen is looking for a Special Consultant as Facility Manager with effect from September 1st, 2026 or shortly thereafter. The position is for 3 years with the possibility for extension.

The Department of Chemistry is an internationally leading research and teaching environment for chemistry. The Department of Chemistry conducts top research within a wide range of chemical disciplines. We work within themes such as the green transition, medicine, material development and quantum technologies. In addition, the department trains excellent graduates in chemistry who are employed in Danish and foreign companies. Tasks

The advertised Facility Manager position will ensure the management and day to day running of the “Advanced Materials Characterization Laboratory”, a new facility for characterization of solid state energy and quantum materials funded by the Villum Foundation. The laboratory will initially consist of four instruments: 1) a Powder X-ray diffractometer (PXRD) designed for in situ measurements at non-ambient conditions 2) a Powder X-ray diffractometer optimized for total scattering measurements for Pair Distribution Function analysis 2) a setup for in-house X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and 3) a Physical Property Measurement System (PPMS) for characterization of physical properties, including electrical and thermal transport measurements and magnetometry measurements. The laboratory will be led by the PI team Kirsten M. Ø. Jensen, Rebecca K. Pittkowski and Sara Lopez Paz.

In your everyday life, you will take care of all aspects related to the running of the laboratory, from ensuring the maintenance of instruments, planning experiments, helping users with the acquisition and potentially the interpretation of data and maintaining records of acquired data, as well as other relevant tasks related to the day to day running of the facility. The users of the facility will include academic and industrial research groups at national or international level.

Your task will include:

• Maintaining the instruments related to the laboratory.

• Manage the daily tasks related to the running of the laboratory
• Coordinate and assist users in the collection and potentially the interpretation of data.
• Participate in other tasks relevant for the functioning of the laboratory and related infrastructure.
• Continually consider possible upgrades of the instruments and the laboratory
• Participate in scientific conferences presenting and advertising the laboratory.

 

We expect

• a PhD degree in chemistry, physics, engineering or equivalent.

• a strong background in solid state or materials chemistry with experience in X-ray scattering and/or X-ray spectroscopy. Further experience in physical property measurements (magnetometry, heat capacity and resistivity) using a PPMS is an advantage.

• fluent communication in English both in writing and orally

• that you work both independently and as part of a team

• that you take initiative and not least provide good support

• that you thrive in a busy everyday life with many different actors, deadlines and tasks, including ad hoc tasks

• that you thrive in functioning as a link between different organizational levels and units

Terms of salary and employment

The employment and salary is made in accordance with the Circular on the Collective Agreement concerning academics in the state sector concluded between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).

Employment will be as Senior Consultant (Specialkonsulent) depending on the relevant candidate’s experience and qualification. The salary is based on seniority. Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.

The position is for 3 years with possibility of extension.

The working time are 37 hours per week on average. The working hours are flexible.
