Department of BioComplexity, Niels Bohr Institute, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering a PhD scholarship from 1. September 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Description of the scientific environment
In the Center for Models of Life, CMOL, we use methods from physics to develop models dealing with computation and communication in biological systems.
We model regulation of living systems with the aim to understand the strategies of gene regulation and dynamics of information transfer along signaling pathways, as well as to unravel the interplay between function and evolution.
1 PhD position in quantitative and conceptual modeling of biological systems.
The Center for Models of Life at the Niels Bohr Institute has up to two openings for PhD studies in quantitative and conceptual modeling of biological systems. The position is funded by an ERC advanced grant under the European Union's Seventh Framework Program, and will be under Supervision of Prof. K. Sneppen.
We are looking for an exceptional candidate with good theoretical foundation that will engage in developing our contemporary theoretical models on complex and biological systems. Potential topics include the dynamics of formation of shapes in embryonic development, of epidemics in the perspective of immune response of the host, single cell variations in bacterial growth and behavior or of other topics to be discussed with the advisor(s).
Independent ideas are highly appreciated, and it is possible to formulate alternative projects within the activities in the Center for Models of Life. There is access to laboratory facilities.
The successful candidate is expected to actively participate in our lively Center and contribute to the atmosphere in our group. The full PhD grant involves some teaching duties as teaching assistant (which can be removed, but at a reduction in salary). The current funding only allow for 3 years PhD program, which require that the candidate already have a master degree.

The position is available for a 3-year period and your key tasks as a PhD student at SCIENCE are:
- To manage and carry through your research project
- Attend PhD courses
- Write scientific articles and your PhD thesis
- Teach and disseminate your research
- To stay at an external research institution for a few months, preferably abroad
- Work for the department
Applicants should hold an MSc degree in Physics, Complex systems, Computational Biology or a related field by the start of the position, with good results and good English skills. As criteria for the assessment of your qualifications emphasis will also be laid on previous publications (if any) and relevant work experience.
Terms of employment
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.
Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.
The starting salary is currently at a minimum DKK 322,642 (approx. €43,015) including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 44,567). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
