Postdoc Position in Nutrient and Metabolite Sensing

Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research

Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences

University of Copenhagen

We are looking for a highly motivated and dynamic researcher with interest in and experience with metabolic research and pharmacological approaches to start in a 2-year postdoc position commencing on 1 November 2019.

The Center was established in 2010 through a generous, unrestricted grant from the Novo Nordisk Foundation (NNF). The vision of the Center is to strengthen interdisciplinary research that transforms our basic understanding of the mechanisms of metabolic health and disease, and to accelerate this knowledge toward new prevention and treatment strategies. The Center has around 200 employees from all over the world. We moved into new laboratories, offices and meeting rooms in the Maersk Tower in summer 2017. In 2018, the Center obtained new strategic funding from NNF to further expand and establish/develop five enabling biology and technology platforms in support of the new research strategy. The position is in the Schwartz group. The aim of the group is to characterize and understand how signalling metabolites and their specific GPCR sensors interact with hormonal and neuronal mechanisms to control endocrine and metabolic functions as the basis for developing novel means to prevent and treat obesity and diabetes. Project description

Key metabolites function not only as an energy sources and metabolic building blocks but also as extracellular signals of fuel availability and metabolic stress signals, which are being sensed through specific cell surface receptors, GPCRs. Most of these signalling metabolites are believed to act locally within the endocrine and metabolic tissues as autocrine and paracrine signals. The project aims at characterizing the signalling metabolite repertoire of adipose tissue and metabolite-mediated cross-talk between adipocytes and immune cells in primary cell cultures obtained from normal and obese human subjects. Cell cultures will be subjected to metabolic stress and the functional characterization will involve the use of selective pharmacological tool compounds for the metabolite receptors.

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic scientist with the following competencies and qualifications:

  • A PhD degree preferably within metabolic research and pharmacology or a related field
  • Experience in the design, implementation and analysis of studies using pharmacological tool compounds
  • Hands on experience in working with primary human adipocytes and immune cells
  • Advanced skills in establishing and interpreting metabolomics analysis
  • Proven track record showing scientific productivity in peer reviewed journals
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Previous teaching experience will be considered an advantage

Terms of employment

The postdoc position is a full-time position for 2 years. Starting date is 1 November 2019.
Salary, pension and terms of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). Depending on qualifications, a supplement may be negotiated.
Non-Danish and Danish applicants may be eligible for tax reductions, if they hold a PhD degree and have not lived in Denmark the last 10 years.
The positions are covered by the “Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff at the Universities” of 28 June 28 2013.
