The University seeks to appoint a professor to the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine to commence 1 January 2027 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Job description
The University of Copenhagen is seeking an outstanding scientist for a professorship in Biology of Cell Division at the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine as soon as possible. The primary selection criterion will be research excellence and emphasis will be placed on the candidate’s ability to document a high level of original scientific work at an international level within the area of basic molecular mechanisms underlying human cell division, cytoskeleton dynamics, chromosome stability. The ideal candidate should have a strong international track record in areas such as:

• Cellular, molecular and genetic mechanisms required for accurate cell division
• Molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in the function of mitotic spindle
• Genetic and post-translational regulation of mitotic proteins
• High-throughput and single-cell live-cell imaging approaches to study human cell division
• Gene-editing, proteomics and microscopy-based analysis of mitotic motors and microtubule-associated proteins

The position should complement and strengthen the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine in live-cell studies, and it is important that the candidate can prove expertise in state-of-the-art imaging and analysis of living cells. Furthermore, the candidate must be an internationally recognized and visionary scientist with a strong track record of international and interdisciplinary collaboration. The successful candidate will develop and lead an internationally recognized and extramurally funded research program and must therefore show a track record of securing external competitive funding. It is expected that the candidate will contribute to teaching in cell biology and supervision of both students and more senior researchers as well as engage in public outreach activities.

The professor’s responsibilities will primarily consist of:

• Research, including publication/academic dissemination
• Research-based teaching, including associated examination
• Research leadership, including guidance and supervision of researchers
• Obligation to share knowledge with the rest of society, including participation in public debate
• Academic assessments

Required qualifications

• Document a high degree of original academic production at an international level, including considerable contributions to the development of the academic discipline
• Manage research and other management functions, e.g. engage in the university’s external academic activities, as well as knowledge and technology transfer
• Provide research-based teaching

The professor is also required to possess good interpersonal and communicative skills.

Terms of employment

The position is a fixed-term position limited to a period of 10 years.

The average weekly working hours are 7.4 hours per week.

Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Taxation and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organisations.

The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities 2025.

Application procedure
After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Appointments Committee.  All applicants are then immediately notified whether their application has been passed for assessment. The Dean then appoints an expert assessment committee in order to make an assessment of the selected applicants for the specific post.
