PhD fellowship in Aging Interventions at the Departments of Cellular and Molecular Medicine and Biomedical Sciences

We are offering a PhD fellowship in Aging Interventions commencing February 1st, 2025 or as soon as possible hereafter.

Our group and research
Our groups utilizes computational science, animal models, and clinical trials to understand and influence the aging process with a particular focus on the role of genome stability and metabolism in aging. We develop and utilize high-throughput approaches such as high-content microscopy and omics investigations to understand the molecular basis of aging and age-associated phenotypes. Lab generated data is routinely analyzed through AI-assisted pipelines such as novel cellular senescence classifiers and fully automated behavioral tracking.

Project description

The proportion of older individuals is growing, and it is therefore important to investigate ways to promote healthy aging. Exercise is one of the most studied interventions and is known to have a variety of health benefits. Dietary interventions have also shown encouraging results, with intermittent fasting being a promising anti-aging intervention. A potential side effect of fasting may be loss of muscle and bone-mass which may be countered by exercise. Further, the effect of exercise on human aging is incompletely understood. In this PhD fellowship you will work jointly with the Department of Biomedical Sciences and the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine to test if fasting, exercise or fasting in combination with exercise may impact the aging process in a randomized clinical trial.
