Assistant Professor for the study of skin bacteria and the pathogenesis in Cutaneous T cell lymphoma

Our research

Our research focusses on the pathogenesis of Cutaneous T cell lymphoma. Our vision is to find new ways to neutralize cancer cells and eventually cure the disease. Our goal is to discover new molecular targets, innovative treatments and new ways to strengthen the immune system's ability to fight disease.

We conduct basic and translational research and have close collaboration with clinicians in dermatology departments in Denmark, the EU and the USA. We have an interdisciplinary approach to science and collaborate with a large national and international network of researchers in areas such as immunology, microbiology, pharmacy, bioinformatics, cancer biology and clinical medicine. We believe in teamwork and have an inclusive and supportive working environment in an internationally open-minded atmosphere with a diversity of nationalities among employees in the group and at the institute.

 

Your job

Our primary interests are skin inflammation and CTCL, which is characterized by the presence of malignant T cells in chronically inflamed skin. We focus on inflammatory processes in the skin, cytokine signaling, cellular heterogeneity at the single cell level, the interaction between malignant and non-malignant skin cells, and the role of bacterial products, metabolites, and toxins as sources of chronic inflammation, malignant transformation, disease progression and resistance to cancer treatments. Your tasks will be to explore the role of skin bacteria and other factors in cutaneous T-cell lymphoma for pathogenesis, disease progression, and drug resistance. These tasks involve tissue culture of primary cells, skin biopsies, single cell multiomics, multi-parameter flow cytometry and cell sorting, and analysis of large datasets, as well as functional studies in vitro and in vivo of malignant and non-malignant T cells, and how the interaction is affected by bacteria and other factors.

 

Your responsibilities will primarily consist of:

• research-based teaching

• knowledge sharing with the wider community

• participation in a formal pedagogical training program for assistant professors

 

Profile

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic scientist with the following competencies and experience:

 

Essential experience and skills:

• You have a PhD in Immunology with background in infectious diseases

• You are highly experienced in single cell transcriptomics (preferably CITE-seq) and the 10x platform, multi-parameter flow cytometry, tissue culture of primary T cells, isolation of cells from biopsies, cell line generation, imaging, and kinase assays, and work with experimental mice

• You have experience in publishing as first author and corresponding author in recognized international, peer-reviewed journals

• You have an active interest in cutaneous T-cell lymphoma and disease heterogeneity, T-cell development, T-cell oncogenesis and drug resistance, skin microbiota

• You have demonstration of innovative skills such as patents and skills to develop potential new therapeutics

• You have international research experience e.g as a visiting researcher as a part of PhD or postdoc or similar

• You have grant writing experience with demonstration of previously acquired independent grants.

• You have experience in supervision of bachelor/master students

• You have proficient communication skills and ability to work in teams

• You have excellent English skills written and spoken
 

Place of employment

The place of employment is at the LEO Foundation Skin Immunology Research Center, Department of Immunology and Microbiology, Panum Institute, University of Copenhagen. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in dynamic and international research environment. Our research facilities include modern laboratories and access to state-of-the-core facilities for imaging, single cell and spatial transcriptomics.

 

Terms of employment
The average weekly working hours are 37 hours per week.

The position is a fixed-term position limited to 3 years.

The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff 2025

Salary, pension and other conditions of employment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Taxation and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant organisation. Currently, the monthly salary starts at 39,900 DKK/approx. 5,300 EUR (August 2026-level). Depending on qualifications, a supplement may be negotiated. The employer will pay an additional 18,07 % to your pension fund.

Foreign and Danish applicants may be eligible for tax reductions, if they hold a PhD degree and have not lived in Denmark the last 10 years.
