Student Assistant for Project on Structured Data Extraction

The Faculty of Humanities, University of Copenhagen, is seeking thorough student to join a research project titled “FREE”. The project is headed by Professor Giovanni Colavizza.

The humanities have traditionally relied on manual analysis, interpretation, and categorization of complex cultural and historical data. As digital methods and artificial intelligence rapidly evolve, new opportunities arise to enhance how researchers explore and understand their materials. This project investigates the potential of applying state‑of‑the‑art AI tools to automatically extract, classify, and structure data, helping humanities researchers work more efficiently and uncover new insights.

Job Tasks

The student will assist in the active development of a tool to be used to support researchers extract critical data from a variety of documents. The position primarily includes support with coding tasks.

The student will, among other things, help with:

  • Code maintenance and development (Python): Refactor and document code and keep the codebase maintainable and aligned with project goals.
  • Testing: Try test cases, evaluate the performance
  • Data extraction: Support design and testing of extraction logic (e.g prompts, OCR) and help evaluate extraction quality on real documents.
  • Supporting the preparation of inputs for surveys and online experiments
  • Assisting with data checks, replication files, and tasks related to reproducibility

The position is well suited for a candidate with a strong interest in IT and programming.
Prior experience with register data, surveys, or experiments is not required; the tasks are clearly defined, and ongoing academic supervision will be provided.

The student will work closely with the senior data scientist currently developing the tool at the centre and the users of the application. The position provides practical experience with digital humanities research and is particularly well suited for a master’s student wishing to strengthen their skills in the development of academic support tools.


Working Hours and Salary

Working hours are flexible but are expected to average approximately 10–15 hours per week.

Employment and salary will be in accordance with the collective agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Public Employees’ Organizations – The State Sector (OAO Joint Agreement), as well as the organizational agreement for Office Clerks, Laboratory Technicians, and IT Staff (HK), section 35.

The minimum hourly wage is DKK 142.97 (1 November 2025 level).

The position is time-limited until 1 Maj 2027.
