Part-time lecture for kiswahili 1 and 2

One-year Teaching Position at the Centre of African Studies, Autumn 2026 and Spring 2027

The Centre of African Studies (CAS) advertises the position of external lecturer for one year to teach its elective language courses, Kiswahili 1 (basic, Autumn 2026) and Kiswahili 2 (more advanced, Spring 2027). The level reached after Kiswahili 2 should correspond to level 2-3 on the UN scale for language proficiency.

These are optional courses available to students undertaking the MA in African Studies, as well as being open to external students. Each of the two courses provides 7.5 ECTS points. Each course is run twice-weekly, for a total of four hours per week, throughout each semester, with exams following soon after completion of the course/s.  Students may take either one or both levels, but to take Kiswahili 2 in the spring semester, one is required to complete Kiswahili 1 the previous autumn.

Students who have completed the course/s are expected to be able to: analyze Kiswahili texts at the appropriate levels; write clear, concise, grammatically correct and accurately spelled prose; translate appropriate-level texts between Kiswahili and English; and both understand spoken Kiswahili and express themselves understandably in Kiswahili, in relevant contexts (such as work, education and everyday life). Furthermore, they are expected to gain an understanding of the historical and cultural dimensions of life associated with Kiswahili-speaking peoples.
