Part-time lecturer or teaching assistant position in Economic Development in Africa
The Centre of African Studies, Faculty of Theology, University of Copenhagen (UCPH), Denmark, invites applications for a one-year position as part-time lecturer or teaching assistant in Economic Development in Africa to be filled by 1 October 2025.
Job content
The course is a 7.5 ECTS point course with classes starting in mid-October and ending mid-December, with exams in January. The focus of the course is on key dimensions and dynamics of economic development in Africa, explored in relation to global, regional, national and local contexts and their interconnectedness. It focuses on debates and arguments related to the structural transformation of African economies, including the role of informal economies, and the various factors that stimulate growth and productivity on the one hand, and produce inequality, marginalization or underdevelopment on the other. It takes as given the significance of power within
all economic and social relations and makes use of interdisciplinary theoretical and methodological approaches to examine these relations and their implications. In addition, the course is expected to combine relevant theoretical and methodological approaches as well as drawing on empirical case studies.
Qualification requirements
To apply for the position as a teaching assistant, you must have at least:
- A relevant master’s degree
To apply for the position as a part-time lecturer, you must have at least:
- A relevant master's degree, and
- Relevant high-level practical experience not obtained through a university or scientific position, or
- Employment in a scientific main position at another university.
Additionally, it is considered a plus if you have:
- A PhD in Economics, Political Economy, Development Economics, Economic History or similar, preferably with a focus on Africa/African economies
- Research experience related to Africa
- Publishing related to African economic development and/or political economy
- Relevant teaching experience, including the ability to teach both basic development economics concepts and broader aspects of African economies
Terms of employment
The position is for 1 year.
Employment as teaching assistant and external lecturer is governed by the Cirkulære om aftale om eksterne lektorer og undervisningsassistenter ved universiteter m.fl. under Uddannelses- og forskningsministeriet, as well as Bekendtgørelse om stillingsstruktur for videnskabeligt personale ved universiteter.
The specific number of hours is determined before each semester and is paid at an hourly rate of
- Teaching assistant DKK 279,85 (as of April 2025)
- Part-time lecturer DKK 304,79 (as of April 2025)
Payment is made according to a rate system, where the majority of the salary is paid retroactively with 1/5 in the months of September-January and February-June.

After the application deadline, the hiring committee selects the applications to be forwarded to the evaluation committee.
