The Department of Science Education, The Section for Science and Mathematics Education Research and Teaching (SMART) is offering a PhD scholarship in Science Education commencing 1 March 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Description of the scientific environment
The PhD fellow will become part of the research project ‘Improving Quality of Laboratory Learning at University Level’ (IQ-Lab) which is a collaboration between Department of Science Education at the Faculty of Science (SCIENCE) and Department of Pharmacy at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences (SUND).
The IQ-Lab project aims at providing teachers, researchers and curriculum designers with in-depth knowledge about

A. which competences students acquire from laboratory work,
B. how they best acquire these competences, and
C. how these competences are used and developed beyond laboratory courses.

The project is financed by the Novo Nordisk Foundation.

The project will provide the context and overall research questions of the PhD project. The PhD fellow will become a member of a project group consisting of one other PhD fellow and four senior researchers, who are affiliated with either the Department of Science Education (SCIENCE) or Department of Pharmacy (SUND). A copy of the project description is available here: https://iqlab.sites.ku.dk/project-description/

Please notice that there are two PhD projects in the IQ-Lab project. We encourage applicants to consider applying for both positions, if applicants would like to be considered for both. Further information about the other position announcement is available here: https://iqlab.sites.ku.dk

The PhD fellow will be affiliated with the scientific environment at both the The Department of Science Education and the Department of Pharmacy, and will be provided a workspace at both departments.

Project description
The context of the PhD project is the course Pharmaceutical AnalyticalChemistry and its place and role in the wider pharmaceutical program. The PhD project will provide a description of how laboratory-related competences that students gain in the course temporally evolve during the students’ time in the ensuing pharmaceutical program.

This particular PhD project will contribute to answering the following research question:
  • In which contexts and how are acquired laboratory-related competences activated at later stages in a pharmaceutical program?

Qualitative methods for data collection and analysis will be a central part of the research methods applied in the project. Although the overall research question is given, the PhD fellow will become highly included in the decision-making in the IQ-Lab project.
