PhD fellowship in Science Education at Department of Pharmacy

We are offering a PhD scholarship in Science Education commencing March 1, 2019, or as soon as possible hereafter.

Description of the scientific environment 
The PhD fellow will become part of the research project ‘Improving Quality of Laboratory Learning at University Level’ (IQ-Lab) which is a collaboration between Department of Pharmacy at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences (SUND) and Department of Science Education at the Faculty of Science (SCIENCE). The IQ-Lab project aims at providing teachers, researchers and curriculum designers with in-depth knowledge about

    A. which competences students acquire from laboratory work, 
    B. how they best acquire these competences, and 
    C. how these competences are used and developed beyond laboratory courses. 
The project is financed by the Novo Nordisk Foundation.

The project will provide the context and overall research questions of the PhD project. The PhD fellow will become a member of a project group consisting of one other PhD fellow and four senior researchers, who are affiliated with either Department of Pharmacy (SUND) or Department of Science Education (SCIENCE). The PhD fellow will be affiliated with the scientific environment at both the Department of Pharmacy and the Department of Science Education, and will be provided a workspace at both departments.

Project description 
The context of the PhD project is the course Pharmaceutical Analytical Chemistry. The PhD project will provide a description on how learning in the laboratory environment influences student’s ways of thinking and practicing. This particular PhD project will contribute to answering the following research question: 
  • Which factors influence pharmaceutical students’ acquisition of laboratory-related competences, and how can such competences be assessed? 
Qualitative methods for data collection and analysis will be a central part of the research methods applied in the project. Although  the overall research question is given, the PhD fellow will become highly included in the decision-making in the IQ-Lab project.

Job description 
Your key tasks as a PhD student at SUND are: 
  • Carry through an independent research project under supervision. 
  • Complete PhD courses or other equivalent education corresponding to approx. 30 ECTS points. 
  • Participate in active research environments including a stay at another research team. 
  • Obtain experience with teaching or other types of dissemination related to your PhD project. 
  • Teach and disseminate your research. 
  • Write a PhD thesis on the grounds of your project. 
Key criteria for the assessment of candidates 
Applicants must have qualifications corresponding to a master’s degree related to the subject area of the project. The preferred candidate has experience with qualitative research methods such as interview studies, and a background in the natural or medical sciences. Applicants who are experienced with teaching in laboratory settings or researching learning in laboratory settings are preferred. Applicants must be able to communicate fluently (written and orally) in at least one Scandinavian language as well as English.

Terms of employment and employment 
The employment as PhD fellow is a full time and for three years. Starting date is 1 March 2019. 
It is conditioned upon the candidate’s success­ful enrolment in the PhD school at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. This requires submission and acceptance of an application for the specific project formulated by the candidate.   
The PhD study must be completed in accordance with The Ministerial Order on the PhD programme (2013) and the University’s rules on achieving the degree. Salary, pension and terms of employment are in accordance with the agree­ment between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State. Depending on seniority and qualification level the monthly salary begins at 26,886 DKK/approx. 3,608 EUR (October 2018-level) plus an employer paid pension contribution at 17.1 %.

The further process  
After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the hiring committee. All applicants are then immediately notified whether their application has been passed for assessment by an unbiased assessor.  
The assessor makes a non-prioritized assessment of the academic qualifications and experience with respect to the above-mentioned area of research, techniques, skills and other requirements listed in the advertisement. 
Once the assessment work has been completed each applicant has the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that relates to the applicant him/herself.
