PhD fellowship on the role of cesarean section on gut microbiota, immunity, and development of allergy and asthma

Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen is offering 1 PhD fellowship commencing February 1st 2019 or soon thereafter. The application deadline is December 18, 2018.
Information on the Department can be found at
The PhD fellow will be placed in the Laboratory Animal Science group at the Section of Experimental Animal Models. The purpose of the research group is to strengthen our understanding of how external factors regulating the gut environment during early life gestation and weaning contribute to long-term effects on the host immune and metabolic systems, and how this may impact disease outcome in animal models for human inflammatory diseases.
It is expected that the PhD fellow will be enrolled in the Graduate Programme In Immunology and Infectious Diseases at SUND and participate actively in this network.
Project description:
The ecosystem of microbes that live inside us has been implicated in a range of health issues. Delivery mode has substantial effect on its composition which may explain why babies born by cesarean section (CS) are more likely to develop allergies and asthma. We have already established a mouse model in which CS induces similar disadvantageous effects on the immune system, and the PhD fellow will continue our work with the rodent model characterizing the effect of CS on the risk of developing symptoms of allergy and asthma. Parts of these studies will take place at the Medical University of Vienna. The importance of the gut microbiota will be investigated in our germ-free animal facility and mechanisms investigated by integrative multi-omics technologies. To evaluate the local effect on the gut milieu, the PhD fellow with conduct FITC dextran gut permeability assay, mucus histochemistry, and gas chromatography analysis of short chain fatty acids.
