PhD fellowship in Medicinal Chemistry at the Department of Drug Design and Pharmacology

Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences
University of Copenhagen

A PhD fellowship within medicinal chemistry is available at the Department of Drug Design and Pharmacology, University of Copenhagen, starting 1st of December 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The research environment
The position is in group of Ass. Professor Elisabeth Rexen Ulven (www.ulvengroup.dk) at the Department of Drug Design and Pharmacology. The research of the group is within organic and medicinal chemistry targeting GPCRs with focus on development of tool compounds for carboxylate sensing GPCRs. The Department of Drug Design and Pharmacology (drug.ku.dk) represents a strong research environment that is leading in medicinal chemistry and neuropharmacology.
The University of Copenhagen (www.ku.dk/english/) was founded in 1479 and is ranked 29 in the world (ARWU2018).

Project description
G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) are highly druggable and one of the largest groups of drug targets today, but many receptors remain to be fully explored. The overall aim of this project is to develop novel tool compounds that will enable or facilitate biological and pharmacological investigations of carboxylate-sensing GPCRs as potential drug targets. The main focus will be on the free fatty acid receptor FFA2, which is a GPCR that is activated by short-chain free fatty acids and has been linked to inflammation and metabolic disorders. The project will include ligand design, organic synthesis, development and characterization of fluorescent tracers and in vitro screening. The project is financed by the Lundbeck Foundation.
