PhD fellow in the field of Physics of Ice, Climate and Earth
The Niels Bohr Institute, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering a PhD scholarship in Physics of Ice, Climate and Earth (PICE) commencing 1 February 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The candidate will be part of the gas laboratory team of PICE that works on reconstructing past atmospheric conditions by extraction and analysing air bubbles from polar ice cores.

The past composition of the atmosphere is recorded in air bubbles in polar ice sheets. Methane (CH4) is an important and strong greenhouse gas in the atmosphere; it is part of a feedback loop between climate and biological production. As a consequence of the short lifetime (~10 years) changes in the atmospheric concentration are fast. During the last glacial period methane concentrations changed rapidly over Dansgaard-Oeschger events and it has been suggested that changes in tropical sources are responsible for the change (e.g. Rhodes et al., Science, 348, 1016-1019, 10.1126/science.1262005, 2015). The goal of the project is to identify methane sources by the isotopic composition of methane. The PhD candidate will form a team with a postdoc working on the same project but with different tasks. The project has an extensive experimental part including building/modifying part of the existing measurement system. We are therefore looking for experimentally skilled applicants preferentially with experience in mass spectrometry.

The position is available for a 3-year period and your key tasks as a PhD student at SCIENCE are:
To manage and carry through your research project
- Attend PhD courses
- Write scientific articles and your PhD thesis
- Teach and disseminate your research
- To stay at an external research institution for a few months, preferably abroad
- Work for the department
Applicants should hold an MSc degree in geophysics, physics, or other related or relevant fields with good results and good English skills. As criteria for the assessment of your qualifications emphasis will also be laid on previous publications (if any) and relevant work experience.
Terms of employment
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.
Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.
The starting salary is currently at a minimum DKK 328.355 (approx. €43,750) including annual supplement (+ pension at a minimum DKK 53,361). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
