PhD fellowship in Linguistics, Department of English, Germanic and Romance Studies
Within the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action (MSCA), University of Copenhagen is offering one PhD position for a Doctoral Candidate (DC), commencing 1 September 2026 or as soon as possible hereafter.
The position is a full‑time appointment for 36 months and is funded by Horizon Europe.
MultiLAwa is a MSCA Doctoral Network. The mission of MultiLAwa is to promote the concept of Multilingual Language Awareness as it investigates Language Awareness in multilingual contexts, zooming in on Critical Language Awareness, Metalinguistic Awareness, and Practical Language Awareness. Adopting a broad understanding of Language Awareness as a general, socially embedded competence, the project addresses major language-related challenges in a rapidly digitalising society and contributes to the development of sustainable, inclusive, and pluri-/multilingual ecosystems across Europe.
More information may be found on the MultiLAwa home page https://www.multilawa.eu.
MultiLAwa will deliver a training programme to 14 Doctoral Candidates that equips them with all capabilities to become leaders of tomorrow's R&I in Europe.
Project description
The successful applicant will join a multidisciplinary EU-funded Marie Skłodowska-Curie International PhD training network. This doctoral position is based at the Department of English, Germanic and Romance Studies at University of Copenhagen.
The Doctoral Candidate will be supervised by Associate Professor Mirjam Schmuck.
IRP5 is embedded into Work Package 1 (WP1) ‘Multilingual communication and resources in the Digital Age: discourses, practices, stereotypes’. WP1 investigates how the concepts of Language Awareness and pluri-/multilingualism are discursively constructed, ideologically framed, and technologically mediated in digital contexts across various societal domains (e.g., media, education, industry, politics). It will provide a research-based catalogue of arguments and language ideologies, with particular attention to issues of linguistic justice, gender fairness, and inclusion.
In this context, IRP5 investigates multilingual gender fairness in AI-generated texts.
Recruiting University: University of Copenhagen (UCPH), Denmark
Partner University for the Joint Doctorate: Université de Lorraine (UL), Nancy, France
Secondments
- Center for Rhetorical Science Communication Research on Artificial Intelligence (RHET-AI), Tübingen (Germany), 4 months
- Leibniz Institute for the German Language (IDS), Mannheim (Germany), 1 month
Objectives:
Despite major advances in GenAI, stereotyping and biases are ubiquitous in texts generated by AI technologies, which runs counter to a European society committed to gender equality. Working in close collaboration with DC4, DC5 will:
- investigate texts generated by leading LLMs (e.g. OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, Mistral’s Le Chat) in terms of gender fairness with a focus on languages other than EN (e.g. DA, FR, DE);
- explore the impact of linguistic factors (i.e. linguistic bias), specifically the effects of grammatically un/gendered languages and the masculine default, on gendered representations using corpus linguistic methods;
- reveal how AI tools echo and reinforce human bias as well as raise Critical Multilingual Language Awareness among users and developers of how LLMs index gender-related structures of power;
- contribute to enhancing the dialogue between linguists and computer scientists to confront sexism in GenAI technologies with the Associated Partners.
