Assistant Professor of Sociology of sport related to health

In the section for Sport, Individual and Society at the Department of Nutrition, Exercise and Sports (NEXS), University of Copenhagen, a 4-year position as assistant professor is available from April 1, 2019.  
The position includes research and teaching in the sociology of sport related to health issues, primarily centered on youth culture related to sports participation The position will require sociological research in the field of Physical Education, and ability to combine sociological and health related research methods.  
 
The assistant professor’s duties will primarily include research, including obligations with regard to publication/scientific communication and research-based teaching with associated examination obligations within sociology of sport. To a limited extent this may also include performance of other duties.  
 
The main duties are:  
 
• To perform high-impact research within his or her own research programme including, for example, continuing publication at an international level, and building a research group around the applicant’s area of research.  
• To contribute to the provision and development of the department’s master programmes, supervision of post-graduate students, and contributing to graduate and under-graduate teaching.  
• To contribute to academic leadership and governance within the department, including contributing to the development of teaching and research activities. This includes administrative roles, and participating in relevant departmental and university committees.  
• To be a key driver of interdisciplinary research programs and funding hereof, by securing external funding, and by participation in international networks  
• To contribute to the development of NEXS' research in sports sociology, and strive for high impact in the field of sociology related to sports, health promotion.  
 
Qualifications  
Applicants are required to have a PhD in sport sociology or related subjects. He/she must demonstrate distinct competences in one or more of the following areas: sport sociology, youth sociology related to sport, or school research focusing on physical education. The applicant must possess extensive teaching and research experience at university level. The ideal candidate has high-level research activities and publications in the field related to thepost. He/she has clearly demonstrated the potential to conduct research and to work in a team.  
 
The ideal candidate:  
• An international reputation for high quality research in sociology of sport, with particular strength in research in one or more of the following broad fields: sociology of health, for example related to young people or school systems; figurational sociology, globalization and welfare and/or social theory (change of social behavior).  
• Strong methodological skills – qualitative and/or quantitative.  
• Skills in interdisciplinary collaboration  
• An international record of publication in sociological research  
• Experience with supervision in the area of sport sociology  
• Experience with international networks in the area of sport sociology, youth sociology and physical education  
• The ability to work effectively and collegially as part of a team  
• Teaching at graduate level  
• An understanding and experience of teaching within a Scandinavian university context  
 
The candidate must be fluent in Danish and English.

Terms of employment  
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.  
 
Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.  
 
The starting salary is currently up to DKK 426.625 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 72.952). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
