211-0037/18-2E Associate Professor of Science Education - three year position

The Department of Science Education, The Section for Science and Mathematics Education Research and Teaching (SMART) seeks an excellent scholar for a three-year position as associate professor in science teaching and learning in laboratories.

The Department of Science Education has since 2007 developed into the largest Danish research unit on science education. We offer a vibrant interdisciplinary research environment and an attractive and friendly work environment. The SMART section pursues research into the teaching, learning and assessment of scientific and mathematical knowledge and competences at all educational levels. In close relation to the academic research published in leading international journals, the section also participates in several development projects both internally at the University of Copenhagen and externally within a wide variety of sectors in which mathematics and science is taught. It is a hallmark of our research to unite strong fundamental and applied research with high impact in society.

The associate professor’s duties will primarily include research and research leadership within the project ‘Improving Quality of Laboratory Learning at University Level’ (IQ-Lab) which is a collaboration between Department of Science Education at the Faculty of Science and Department of Pharmacy at the Faculty of Health. IQ-Lab aims at providing teachers, researchers and curriculum designers with in-depth knowledge about

A. which competences students acquire from laboratory work,
B. how they best acquire these competences, and
C. how these competences are used and developed beyond laboratory courses.

The project is financed by the Novo Nordisk Foundation. The project will provide the overall context of the associate professor’s research. The associate professor will work in close collaboration with three other senior researchers from both departments. The associate professor will participate in the project’s workpackages that pertain to the three aims (A, B, C above). Together with the three other senior researchers, the associate professor will work closely together with two PhD fellows who will primarily work on aims B and C, respectively. Co-supervision of the PhD fellows will be a possibility. A copy of the project description is available at https://iqlab.sites.ku.dk/project-description/

Other duties include obligations with regard to publication/scientific communication and research-based teaching with associated examination obligations within science education.

The candidate must be able to carry out science education research within a relatively specified project. The associate professor must document that she or he will be able to conduct research within several (but not necessarily all) of the following sub areas:
  • Curriculum analysis
  • A priori analysis of assignments and a posteriori analysis of students’ work in a university pharmacy program
  • Investigation of teaching and learning in a laboratory setting
  • Research on formative and summative assessment of students’ learning
Qualifications

Applicants must preferably be able to communicate fluently (written and orally) in at least one Scandinavian language as well as English.

Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, original scientific production at an international level, including contributions to developments in their field, as well as their documented teaching qualifications. Managerial and out-reach qualifications of applicants including ability to attract external funding will also be considered.
